Forums - Gaming - How many of each console would have been sold if they were built to last?

The official failure rate for the PS2 at this current point in it's lifetime is less than 5%. It is no where near as high as everyone thinks.

After the class action lawsuit Sony offered free repair or replacement of PS2s till 2005 and since the vast majority of faulty PS2s wer made between launch and 2003 then they would most likely be replaced under this deal and not count as new sales.

5% would not be the total lifetime falure rate of the PS2 ... It would represent the failure rate of the PS3 due to manufacturing defects within a certain timeframe (say 1 year).

Even without manufacturing defects electronics fail ... Devices with moving parts (optical drives, fans, hard-drives) generally have well known failure rates after a few years, environmental factors (dust, smoke, static electricity, humidity and electricity) all have an impact on when a system fails, and abuse can quickly kill a system.

Unless it was never used and it was kept in a clean room, you would not expect most electronic devices to last more than 5 to 10 years

The only system I ever had fail on me was a Sega 32X. I have (and all of these still work, and are originals, never broke): Atari 2600, NES, SNES, N64, GCN, Wii, GBC, GBA, GBASP, DS, DSL, VB, SG, SGG (sound died), PSP. I have never repurchased a console or handheld.

PS3: 5.51m/51w, avg 108,039/w (up 239)
360: 12.93m/102w, avg 126,764/w (up 625), leads PS3 by 7.42m (up 70k), avg lead 18,725/w (up 386)
Wii: 13.52m/51w, avg 265,098/w (dn 1,102), leads PS3 by 8.01m (up 90k), avg lead 157,059/w (dn 1,341)

If 360 sales stabilize, PS3 sales increases needed to pass 360 by...
01/08: (008w) +875.8%, 04/08: (021w) +344.4%, 07/08: (034w) +219.3%, 10/08: (047w) +163.5%

If PS2 sales freeze, Wii sales increases needed to pass PS2 (as of Mar07, 108.4m) by...
2008: (008w) +4373.8%, 2009: (060w) +0496.5%, 2010: (112w) +0219.6%, 2011: (165w) +0116.9%

At +0% it will pass it in 358w, the week ending September 19th, 2014, at an age of 409w (7y44w).
Current age of PS2: 7y37w.

Last update: Week ending November 3, 2007

I know it's simply anecdotal, but out of all the systems I have owned I have never had one break except my PS2 (even my PSone still runs). I replaced my PS2 twice (meaning I bought 3 of them). There has to have been some planned obsolescence involved in that. Systems just don't break that easily.

Other than that, my original NES still works, as does my Atari 2600. so does my SNES, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, PSone, N64, Gameboy, GBC, GBA, Gamecube, Xbox, DS, PSP, and Wii.

N64: First purchased at launch - September, '96. Purchased used replacement in '02, left with family when I moved out. Purchased another used replacement (to have my own) in Aug, '06.

GCN: First purchased in summer, '02. Never replaced. Also have GBAP.

Wii: First purchased at launch - November, '06. Never replaced.

PS1: First purchased used Aug, '06 ($3). Never replaced.

PS2: First purchased used July, '07. Never replaced.

I'm also curious about this, but it's not just a matter of how many units were replaced, but how many people bought more than one PS2, even if the first they had worked well. I know two people with two PS2s: One on the living room, and another in their dorm. Also I know one who bought the PS2 redesign when it was released and left the old one in the closet.

Each time a game like God of War II doesn't sell more than, say, 5 millions, with an installed base of over 100 million consoles (120, as Sony fans claim to be), I ask myself "Why?". And there are two main reasons which come to my head, which I believe are both correct: a) There must be a great majority of casual gamers in the installed base, and b) There are not as many people with PS2s, even if they have sold as many as they say.

So, I'd say 75 millions of different people owned a PS2 during last gen.

Video on topic, in Spanish, but still cool even if you don't understand:

the video is great, and if you dont speak spanish it doest matter just watch the video and listen to the cheering, lots of fun hahaha

This is one of the reasons I like Nintendo so much. A) They have a track record for most durable consoles, B) They only report how many consoles are actually SOLD, not just shipped to stores.

I've bought THREE ps2's!

Many PPL I know have bought multiple as well. Count atleast 100(heh) 50 for me and the homeboys.

I am WEEzY. You can suck my Nintendo loving BALLS!

I've heard developer estimates that the current install base for the Playstation 2 (unique working consoles) is about 80 million worldwide, based on some formula involving software sales and typical attach ratios.

I know some people who have had 4 gamecubes. I know someone on their 3rd. I repeat. 3rd Wii.
You gotta rember the way the console was treated makes a BIG diffrence in how long they live. I have NEVER lost a single console. I have had NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, N64, PS1, PS2, PS3, Wii, X-box, and a few others inbetween. I do fear the most for my Wii for a first failure, becuase I have had it crash due to over-heating.

I dont smoke, I keep my house rather dust-free, and I do not let animals, kids, or rowdy people NEAR my entertainment system. It cost me WAAY too much to let something happen to it. I'm not saying there are defective equipment out there. I got a graphics card that almost smoked my entire computer. It was running at 90c, and my P4 was at 70c because the ambient temp was 65c. I am lucky I didnt fry my processor, and everything else in my computer due to the extreme ambient heat. 1 bad chip, can litterally cook EVERYTHING in a console. I could run games and everything perfect. Not a single artifact on that computer. Something like that on a PS3, or Wii. After 6months or a year, or even two years. When dust gets in the fans, and the air-flow is diminished, the heat will cook many many things. I dont mention the 360, becuase they cook with perfectly good chips. A problem like that would fry it within hours of turning it on.
I think DKII's numbers are close to right tho. That's what I would say.

Wow, that sux, what card it was? That made me remember that some time ago when rearranging my case,

I forgot to put the CPU heatsink again... after some time of playing, I noticed the heatsink on the desk...

the CPU was at 110°C
