Forums - Microsoft - I want to get an RPG but which one?

Tales is definitely a more action RPG experience while Lost Odyssey is more traditional.

I liked LO more than Tales, both are fantastic.

I'm talking about reviews. VC only has 1 review, but it's from RPG Gamer, and it's only one percentage point lower than the score for Tales of Vesperia. Strategy RPGs often get good reviews, so I see no reason why the score for VC won't be at least close to Tales. Perhaps I should have specified reviews but I thought it was pretty obvious. I don't know why you're so eager to know about VC, unless you have a PS3 (you don't let it on though).

As for handhelds vs. consoles, an RPG's quality is not defined by the size of the screen or the graphics. The SNES has some of the best RPGs of all time (Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6) and people still enjoy those games despite them having 2D, outdated graphics. And since when was I talking about an RPG's quality as opinion? Mrstickball was talking about review scores, and I refuted that there were several RPGs on the DS that had better scores. Even when you ignore that, I reiterate that an RPG's quality is not dependent on the system. Hell, I thoroughly enjoyed the Golden Sun games because of the puzzles and the battle system, not the size of the screen or the graphics.

But when you ignore the fact that the discussion was about review scores and try to push your personal opinion into the discussion, you have a pretty decent argument.

And referencing your earlier post:

I was talking Gameranking reviews. I apologize that I didn't specify "console JRPGs" from the Big 3. That's what I was meaning - Tales of Vesperia is the highest rated between any PS3, Wii or X360 RPG, and I feel that there's a great reason behind it: It's a fan-friggin'-tastic JRPG, one of the best I've played.

I'm not understanding your logic here, Montana. You first argue that VC will give ToV a run for it's money:

There are 5 RPGs on the DS that have a better score on Gamerankings than Tales. I don't think there's really any dispute that the DS is part of this generation, so it beats the 360 by a comfortable margin in the JRPG category. But thanks for bringing up a PS3 game which was COMPLETELY UNRELATED. If you want to bring up PS3 games, Valkyria Chronicles could give Tales a run for its money. And I really have no idea why you recommended western RPGs...

Then go back and say that it may get close to ToV.

My whole point is that currently, Tales of Vesperia from both a critics standpoint, and a JRPG enthusiasts standpoint (someone that plays a lot of JRPGs) mostly agree that Tales of Vesperia is the best, most well-rounded JRPG on the market. Every JRPG made for next-gen consoles can, and will, be judged against what ToV did in terms of pacing, storytelling, graphics, and of course, gameplay. That's not to say that Disagaea is bad, or mediocre: It's certainly a phenominal strategy RPG. But again, when we talk console JRPGs at the moment, the king is ToV.

And I guess it's hard to argue for, or against, the validity of the DS and PSP offerings for JRPGs. They are kind of in an entirely different world. What's going to be a better game? Disgaea DS or Disgaea 3? Portable JRPGs are awesome in their own right, but IMO, console JRPGs are far more fleshed out than their portable counterparts. That's not to say that Crisis Core or TWEWY aren't great, but if they were console RPGs, they may be considered mid-tier in their current execution of the JRPG formula. And mind you, your talking to a guy that just got a DS and has already put 10hrs into DQIV and FFIII, and think both DS rendentions are phenominal. But they do such in their own right.

Ultimately, and unfortunately, all we have to go off of, as a true litmus test are review websites, because personal opinion can always have a bias against it. Aggreggation is the key to understanding what is "good" and what is "bad", and review aggreggators are good at that. However, at the same time, user aggreggation is also a valid answer, as a multitude of users may be right about something as well.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Hey, there is nothing wrong with thinking that Valkyria Chronicles (a.k.a. The best game of this gen) will challenge Tales as the highest rated console JRPG this generation.

Outlaw, how much VC have you played to make an honest opinion of it?

I haven't. But that's the joke stick. I am just really excited for the game. (far more so than selnor and starcraft are for Fable 2)

Check out the awesome thread I made for it.

lol, tangent here again(sorry).

I just thought I'd tell you guys, I've been playing Fable: The Lost Chapters on my 360 BC. I hadn't played the original since back in the mid Xbox days. I'll tell you, I think the game was under-rated. I actually like it a lot, lol. Either it's under-rated, or it just appeals to me a lot, because it's really addicting.

So, just in case I start to fanboy out for Fable 2, which I have now preordered, know that the reason is I've been all about some Fable 1 since I restarted Vesperia.

So yes, if Fable 2 is as good as Fable 1, then woot.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

See, I thought Fable was good as well. It's very short, but still fun to play.
