Forums - Sony - Yoshida: PS3's lack of fortunes in Japan is "mainly a software thing"

Need Moar Software NAO!

Around the Network

Well, he's recognizing the problem. Real question is, what the *%&$ are they actually doing about it? While LBP has a good chance to save the PS3, they still need to have a pretty stellar TGS to get some momentum back.

It's all about the game.

So even the Sony Studio boss admits the PS3 library is lacking... that's not good

He admits it.  Not everyone has it in himself to admit something, even when shown that it is so.

Ummm, sorry Yoshida, you guys dropped the ball. This will be a classic "too little, too late" situation. Even if they finally get the good software out, it won't change anything. End of story.

Huh. Who would've thought that beggining anew in my real life would coincide with starting anew on vgchartz?

Any day now, the dollar will be worth less than 2 zloty......any day now.....and my life savings will be in total jepordy ;(.

since 360 is easier they tend to lean towards 360 unintentionally.

... what?

I think it's very intentional. If it's easier to develop for, why not go that route? Shorter development cycle, less money out, potentially more ROI. Sony has a ways to go to woo developers the way Microsoft has this gen, whether it be with better development tools or more money lining their pockets.

OT: Well, besides software now, it's bang for your buck. The 360 is cheaper than the Wii and has more Japanese oriented titles than the PS3. Not only that, I bet the reseller market for the 360 is booming because of the back catalog.

Obvious answer is obvious.

Sony need to make internal RPG studios. Don't buy any studio or anything, I mean make some new original studios for RPGs. The amount of shooters they have is pathetic. RPGs or bust.

I'm not sure why everyone has to go to the RPG route. RPG aren't lighting up the Wii charts in Japan, and it's quite a healthy console. An RPG didn't cause the PSP to rise from the ashes either. The problem Sony has is they purposely catered to the western market this time, and it bit them in the ass. At this point, they can make strides towards the Japanese market, but they are probably years away from getting that kind of software out if they just now realized this, and years from now will just be too late.

I agree with Onyxmeth...the PS4, or whatever it´ll be called, is their real chance at a comeback in Japan.

The amount of upcoming Shooters announced from them??? 4??
Socom - October
Resistance 2 - November
Killzone - Feb 09
MAG - Who knows....

Their releases seem a good distance appart aswell... and how many games are coming between
all 4 of them???

Didn't MS lineup some decent number of RPG's for the 360??? Arent they last in JPN????
SONY is preparing some decent Shooters and Action games for PS3....  arent they last in
america?????

It's all to help sales......

I agree. Outside of MGS4 and HSG5, the only popular series in Japan to have been released on the platform thus far have been DMC4, a Yakuza spinoff, and Dynasty Warriors, the latter of which still usually hits the ps2 at some point.

No.

The problem in Japan, is that *all* of the really popular software for the PS2 has already been released - with the exception of Final Fantasy (and DQ, but they are likely to never get DQ on the PS3).

All of the biggest titles have been and gone - and while some of them sold "ok" - very few ignited hardware in a meaningful way.

I really doubt they will ever get the critical mass of software on the PS3 than they did on the PS2 - the PS2/Wii are both still popular (and selling a lot of software), and they are much easier to develop for than the PS3 (which is risky & costly).

And to make matters worse, the 360 is nibbling away at both software and hardware - if MS actually manage to fix their supply issues, they could have a sustained run of outselling the PS3.

...

Their only hope is a significant price reduction of the PS3, combined with the release of a couple of big guns - say FFXIII & GT5 - at the same time. Then have enough support to keep the ball rolling.

And to be brutally honest - software sales on the PS3 plain out suck - its entering its 3rd Xmas in Japan, and ONE title has broken the 500k barrier. Now that the PSP has had some big titles, the PS3 is taking the crown as the "sucky software seller".

I think Yoshida has a point.

Japanese developers have a lot of problems creating HD content ,most of the middel and small size development teams dont have the know-how even to try to do HD content.

The slowing down of the japanese market ,the japanese economic crisis and everything has created a background very hard for the HD consoles ....and very good for the DS ,PSP and even Wii ...
