Forums - General - Tim Burton and Johnny Depp making another movie!

Tim Burton's my favourite director. He's had a few missteps, namely Planet of the Apes and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but he's had his fair share of masterpieces as well - Big Fish, Ed Wood, Edward Scissor Hands, Nightmare Before Christmas.

I do agree though that he hasn't been as creative as he once was. An original idea would be nice and I am looking forward to the remake of his original short film Frankenweenie.

Very much looking forward to seeing Alice in Wonderland, but doubt very much it'll be any where near his top works.

Meh. Not news. Let me know when he actually has another idea. I'm sick of these remakes.

Tim Burton hasn't had an original idea since Mars Attacks! in 1996? I mean, I know it was loosely inspired by a series of trading cards, but that was definitely an original Tim Burton film. Everything since then was either written by somebody else, or it was a remake of a book, a legend, or a film, or in the case of Big Fish, it was an adaptation actually adapted by someone else for him.

In fact, now that I think of it, he only wrote 5 of his 12 (soon to be 13) movies, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Ed Wood, and Mars Attacks!. Now that I noticed this trend, it's no surprise those are my favorite 5. This guy should write another movie instead of just shopping around "the Time Burton style" which isn't even original.

Doesn't Batman technically count also? It wasn't really based on any of the comics directly.

Wikipedia says the screenplay was written by Sam Hamm, Warren Skaaren, and Jonathan Gems, based off a story by Sam Hamm.  At that point his only feature films were PeeWee's Big Adventure and Beetlejuice, so they wrote this Batman movie and gave it to the hot young new director with the wacky goth look.

@pearljammer, HOLY CRAP he's remaking Frankenweenie?  Okay I'm excited again.

Tim Burton should be directing Charlie Kaufman scripts. What he could have done with Eternal Sunshine

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Sleepy Hollow, best movie he's done since Batman Returns.

i dk why i said Batman Returns, Still haven't seen Ed Wood, Sweeney Todd or Big Fish is prob. why.

Sleepy Hollow is bloody awesome. The guy doesn't get enough horror film offers and its a tragedy. He should have been given one of the trailers in Grindhouse.

No way!
I think Michel Gondry is much better with a camera.  Tim Burton is all about brilliant art direction.  Gondry is all about brilliant in-camera trickery.  Eternal Sunshine, being about dream logic, needed more in-camera trickery than art direction.  Gondry couldn't do a Beetlejuice or an Edward Scissorhands, but I'd like to see Tim Burton make The Science of Sleep or some of Gondry's music videos.

You should really see Ed Wood.  Ed Wood is one of my favorite directors, and everybody should know about him.  Tim Burton made the perfect biopic for him.

You really should see Ed Wood and Big Fish as they are both masterpieces in my opinion. Sweeney Todd was very good and I would argue it was as good as Sleepy Hollow.

Charlie Kaufman is one of my favourite screenwriters too! I loved Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine. Being John Malkovich was pretty damn good too. Speaking of Malkovich, if you havent yet seen Burn After Reading, you should really do yourself a favour and go to it.

@Rubang: Yep, he sure is. And if I'm not mistaken it's being filmed in stop-motion animation. Completely agree with you on the Gondry-Burton comparison.

Yes art direction is his thing but that's limiting his contribution. I think social commentary and character depth is an aspect of his films people neglect. Perhaps Kaufman is too "real" for Burton though.

I feel torn between Burton and his artistic appeal in the same way Fincher's visual look over shadows other aspects of his talent.

Eternal Sunshine was really good, but I think Tim burton could have done better, or maybe another actor?

Ed Wood is a great film, but Big Fish is awesome.
