Forums - General Discussion - Does 0.999... Equal 1?

skeezer said:
1/3 = .333333......

1/3 X 3 = 1

.33333.....X 3 = .9999.............

So Maybe...I made a thread about this before...I'll go look for it

But 1/3 does not equal .33333.... it equals .3-bar

1/3 ~=~ .333333

The question arises from our use of the decimal counting system, if we used a base-3 system it would be more accurate for dividing by 3.  Of course than nothing else would work.

In that system then 1/3 = .1; but we don't use a base-3 system.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

No, the one is a number that consists out of four numbers and the other consists just out of one

My god. You clearly need to retake 3rd Grade Arithmetic.

The "..." in mathematics is used to denote that a number goes on forever.

you use wiki as a source?

Yes, 0.999999999............... does equal 1.

Let's use a simple algebraeic equation.

Let c = 0.999...

10c= 9.9999.....

10c -c = 9

9c/9 = 1.

c = c

1 = 0.999...

The "......." is suppose to signify a -bar.

^_^

Let c = 2

10c= 2

10c -c = 8

8c/8 = 1.

c = c

1 = 2

hahaha WHAT?

If you knew the answer what was the point of this thread...

is dtwei always like this?

No! Every single person who was taken elementary math knows that the "..." means infinty, goes on forever, ad infinitum. Forever! FOREVER!

It is common knowledge for god's sake!

Than the bolded part is wrong.

If "......" is bar, then .33333...... * 3 =1 and not .99999......
