Does 0.999... Equal 1?

But 1/3 does not equal .33333.... it equals .3-bar

1/3 ~=~ .333333

 

The question arises from our use of the decimal counting system, if we used a base-3 system it would be more accurate for dividing by 3.  Of course than nothing else would work.

In that system then 1/3 = .1; but we don't use a base-3 system.

 

The "......." is suppose to signify a -bar.

 

 

Than the bolded part is wrong.

If "......" is bar, then .33333...... * 3 =1 and not .99999......
