No sony will lose a tremendous amount of money, I dont see a price cut at all from sony in 2008.
I do see a cut march 2009 though, a drop that will help determine there future in the console war.

sony has to be close to at least breaking even on the ps3...but even so i doubt they will drop the price any time soon.
they have soo much money to make up from the first year of it's life that i doubt there will be a price drop until they can sell the ps3 at even money even after the pricedrop. there will certainly be a pricedrop before the end of next year but i'd guess none for the rest of this year.
If they cut the price to $299 they would be a serious threat to Nintendo. But I am not expecting a price cut anytime soon. They would have to lower the production cost to a level where PS3 game profits>PS3 hardware losses after the price cut. That's not going to happen before a 45nm Cell and a 45nm RSX comes, which isn't going to happen this year. They would also have big supply problems, which would make them ridiculed, just like with the MGS4 bundles. And the 399 euro LBP bundle will still sell a hell lot, even at such a price.
They will not cut price your best bet is they bundle a game with the system
PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.
Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

No chance - not gonna happen.
Last year SONY said "We currently have no plans to cut the price of PS3". This gave them room to cut the price in a week, a month or whenever.
This year SONY says "There will NOT be any price cuts THIS year.".
Therefore we should expect a pricecut next year for PS3 -- and expect the price cut to be around $50 -- since any more and it would push SONY back into the red.
If your wondering how SONY plans to compete this holiday season after the Wii's success and 360's price drops --> Simple, Games, Games and more games. SONY wants to make money of PS3 games in order to begin climbing out of the $3 billion hole. Once they have shown shareholders PS3 can make money AND they cut manufacturing costs they will then use price cuts to lure new consumers. This plan also benefits from limiting Microsoft's reaction -- since how much can M$ cut the price on the Arcade now, its $199 vs. $149-PS2 bundle...
| Jandre002 said: I think its more possible than a lot of people think. LBP almost needs a $299 PS3 to be successful, we have had multiple hints that the price drops "$100 every year" according to Howard Stringer. Edit: This is not to mention that Howard Stringer already stated they make more on software than they lose on hardware. |
Yes, but they need profitability, they lost 3 billion over the past 2 years in their gaming division, the parent company and the investors won't put up with it unless the division can show profitability, if I was in charge I would drop the price along with the 1st PS3 redesign (slimmer with 45nm Cell and RSX but not the PSThree) around Feb/March next year, in time for AC Blu-Ray/FFXIII demo bundle, Yakuza 3 and Biohazard 5 in Japan, Killzone 2, RE5 and Infamous in NA and Europe.
That way I would be profitable the whole year (Was already profitable Q1, Q3 is a given, and Q4 would be almost certain as well) and the price of producing the machine would be down and I would be able to afford a price cut without breaking the bank. Of course that would come at the expense of marketshare.
I doubt Sony could afford another price cut. The launch price of a 60GB PS3 was $599. As of now, the price of an 80GB PS3 is $399. If there was a $50-$100 price cut, I highly doubt Sony could afford to slash $250-$300 off a system in only two years.
I don't see a price cut this early either. what i see is what's already in the pipeline, which is putting in more bang for buck items such as larger HDD's.
What i'd LIKE to see is - to flog a year dead horse not counting the limited MGS4 US bundle - is the return of backwards compatability.
How much more bang do they need with the entire PS2 calalog?
I do understand why they cut it out though, it just annoys me lol
