Forums - Sony - Little Big Planet Beta. First Impressions.

Hey guys, As you might know i got my hands on one of the beta keys for little big planet yesturday.

http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=42898&start=0

This will be a "little" ongoing thread where i will post and update my impressions as i try out the game. You can ask any questions you have regarding the beta and i will answer them to the best of my ability.

First of all though. Allow me to now say with certainty. Little Big Planet is HUGE ! :P

The game seems really fun, and i haven't been this excited about a game for quite a while.

From Here on there might be spoilers, though i should note that it won't be heavy spoilers since you only have the first three levels of the game in the beta. (I believe it's a online beta so most of it will be making levels sharing and playing other peoples levels)

When you boot up the game.

It all starts by a video you see. There are a lot of people sleeping and aparently when they sleep all their creative ideas and things like is what forms little big planet. Lol.

Anyways, after that, you start in sort of a tutorial. You have a standard sackboy who has holy light shining down upon him.

The voice from some of the trailers explains you all kinda crap. Like how to move, how to jump, how to shake your waste, move your arms, change expressions Etc. Then you run some and the holy light dissapears and it's a cast roll. Aparently. There are a bunch of heads and stuff (all pictures) popping up with names on them. I figure it must be the guys and girls who made the game. Either that or completely random people lol.

By the end you will be designing the look of your sackboy. This is how mine ended up looking (You don't have a whole lot to start with. I cracked up though when i made the guy.)

My First Sackboy

So anyways when you are done, you enter your "space pod thingy" that you can decorate in any way you like. I'll show you my pod a little later. There are a total of 3 of the levels from the game in the beta. All 3 are meant to teach you how to do certain things. This is things such as the regular platforming and jumping up to grab onto things, going down hill on a horse or a skatebord etc. All in all it's really nice XD and fun to boot. I'm looking forward to trying other peoples levels though.

The level Creator tool seems really fun and there certainly is a lot you can do. I tried it out for a little while but i ended up making some of the most fucked up thing ever. Another thing i should mention is that you have to watch tutorial on everything in the level creator before you get started, so that really pissed me off cause i was impatient and couldn't be arsed :P

My Space Pod, As you can see my sackboy was redesigned at this point. Made him look like a french pirate.

In Conclusion little big planet seems like a very very fun game :P and i look forward to playing it some more. I hope you got something out of these impressions, but if not, you can ask me whatever about the game and i'll try to answer you :)

EDIT: btw sorry for the piss poor picture quality. I'm currently using my sdtv. My HDtv is packed away because i'm rearranging some stuff :P

UPDATE:

The level editor IS FREAKIN AWESOME ! Damn. I've made a level, where you start by jumping up on a vehicle that's made of patially wood, partially spunge and which has 3 soda cap wheels and 1 skateboard wheel, then you go to the gate, get ready, start your engine.. and launch ! (with the rocket i've attached to the back)
You then drive through the level while things explode and firery objects appear during the course. (if you don't stand correctly you explode) and then finally you get launched (partially with the boost of the somewhat 20 tnt boxes near the end of my "ramp" into air, and over a huge object on fire, then down into spunges that form the words "thanks" whereafter they get blown up.

Other worthy mentions are a rabbit like creature that blows up on your path (it also makes a sound and says Hurr in a text bubble when you pass it)

There is a intro in the beginning where thers a "thing" with hair that's on fire, (part of it explodes) that also spurts a chat bubble where i introduce you to the map) .. finally thers another "thingy" which gets blown up during the course whereafter a text bubble with "aw" appears XD

It should also be mentioned that you can get a grand price for completing, which is the vehicle .. and it looks really far out (but drives pretty decently) :P so it's all good XD

I tried the level with 3 other random people.. it would seem the force was not strong enough.. so we partially blew up partially got stuck lol..
I also tried it with one dude where we completed the map with no problems and then he favorited it XD nice !

I will update with more pics tomorrow when i get home. I might be able to get some high quality pics for you then :P

EDIT: sorry about the lack of update or high quality pics i was talking about but i dunno where the beta stores your photos XD can't find them. Either way. I had to update. Because of something awesome.

I just finished a map whereyou have to save a village by driving a tank and shooting some evil monsters, you then choose which of two other tanks to continue in (1 shoots fast, another has two cannons) then in the end you meet the evil guy who's attacking the village (Lord babyfoot (he has tiny feet)) and then as you can't get a clear shot, a ninja advices you to "attack his weak point for massive damage" you then do a little platforming and jump on a button labelled "weak point" Then a barrage of bombs drops and blows the evil guy up. :P XD it's taken me most of today but it's seriously awesome !

Beyond that i also have two "rocket car maps" meaning maps where you choose a vehicle with a rocket attached to it and then fly through the map. In one of them there are two unique paths, the other one is for more players on the 1 vehicle. :P It's really kewl XD

So are the tutorials annoying or were you just impatient?

Didnt the developer say that the first 12 levels of the game were basically a tutorial?

Indeed, I heard something like this too, although it might be like Zelda Twilight Princess where you get a new item sometime into the game and can experiment immediately with that tool in the level.  Might be something like that.

@ xenophon13:
Well i was impatient. It's quite obvious that this game is also geared towards people who has never held a controller before. They illustrate with videos of both the controller and the sack figure doing the various things mentioned. It's explained so that a 5 year old would be able to understand it (if they knew english) although they aren't really annoying. A little maybe :P

@ kowenicki:
I saw that interview too.. however i'm not sure what more they would teach you. I think i've learned mostly everything in the 4-5 levels included in the beta and the "world builder" (which is awesome btw)

Update will also post it in the op:

Spanish site giving out some keys! do this

"""Ok, guys, another website is giving away more betas.

http://www.meristation.com/v3/des_no...928c0f&pic=GEN

It's a Spanish one. The only thing you have to do is write an email to the following address: concurso@meristation.com and with the following subject: "Beta MeriStation Little Big Planet".

Tomorrow morning, at 8 am (Spanish time) they will send 1250 codes, in the same order as the received emails.

This thing started half an hour ago, so I guess you still have some time left to get a spare one :)

Good luck!"""""

I've just played about an hour, and it is incredibly awesome. It is a really fun game, Steven Fry is awesome, he just has such a comforting voice... The presentation is incredible. I have not got full control of the level creator yet, I think I have gone through most of the tutorials, but it is very intuitive and easy to use, but there are very many options
