Forums - PC - I FINALLY upgraded my PC...

Due to my laptop and Warhammer online 'not getting along', I could no longer hold off on buying a new PC.

My old one (PC) was a Athlon 2500, 1 gb ram, 120gb hd, and some base model nvidia  256mb video card. Fine for games like warcraft three but could only barely run Civ 4...

The old one hasnt really been used for over a year, since then my laptop has sufficed. But except for games like spore and hopefully Civ 4 Colonization it struggles to run most 'current' games well...

Anyway, what do you guys/girls think of this (bareing in mind its to late for me to change anything...)?

Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad Processor - LGA775 Pkg, 2.4 GHz, 8MB L2 Cache Total, 1066MHz FSB

DDR2-800 Corsair 4GB-Kit [TWIN2X4096-6400C5 G] (2x XMS2 2GB) PC-6400 RAM, 2x240-pin DIMMs, Non ECC Unbuffered, 5-5-5-18

8800GTX 768MB PCI-E Asus Graphic Card DDR3 HDCP Dual-DVI-I DirectX 10 TV Out

2 x : 500GB 3.5" SATA-II Seagate Hard Drive 32MB Cache 7200rpm

Thermaltake Tough Power 850W Active PFC Cable Management, 14CM Fan

Logitech G15 Keyboard, GamePanel LCD, Illuminated Characters, Programmable G-keys

I can now run warhammer online at the highest settings at the max res (1680x1050) for my old moniter. It looks alot better than the laptop at 1024x768 and all settings turned right down...

I was suprised how cheap most of it was, except the damn power supply. I didn't think they would cost much at all...

HD $190 (2x500gb $95 each)
power supply $200
g15 $76
8800gtx $150 (Bought from my brother)

Asus Mainboard P5K-E/WIFI-AP CH1-13 , LGA775, Intel P35+ICH9R, Core2Quad, FSB 1333MHz, Dual-Ch, DDR2-1066, 8-Phase power, Heat Pipe, Stake Cool 2, WiFi-AP Solo,ATX

You probably paid too much for the PSU as its far beyond what you need but the rest is excellent.

Tease.

The problem now is that i think i need to upgrade my moniter too, i have a 2 year old Chimei 22inch 1680x1050. It was more than enough for the old computer. But now i'm not sure it is...

Should i buy a new one and if so what should i get?

I think you should keep your monitor because if you get a new it will most likely have a higher resolution which would give you lower fps on your games. Also your computer was a terrific price, other than your psu, and quite possible your cpu (it is 189 on newegg) but still better than buying a new prebuilt computer.

He can keep games at a lower resolution setting if he wanted to, but with a bigger monitor he will have the option of the higehr res as well. Also I agree with everyone, the PSU should not be the most expensive part in your set up.

Is there something wrong with your 22 inch? 24 inches are nice if you've got the money...it's at least a $100 jump from 22s to 24s though...I don't see what's wrong with a 22.

As for if you did well with prices...it looks like you paid standard amounts for almost everything.

And you paid 19 cents per GB, which isn't bad...you want to stay below 20 cents per GB...you could have maybe done better though...there's plenty of 7200rpm 500 GB HDs on newegg for $70 each, that'd be 14 cents on the GB.

And yeah, it seems like you paid too much for your PSU. Hopefully it's top-notch, because that's a high-end price...it should be closer to $100.

Overall looks like a good build for a good price though...something you can only get building it yourself.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

The only problem with that is the game becomes blurry unless it is windowed, otherwise you are right he can have a super high-res screen.

I only bought the PSU cause my brother said so, he had some reason for it at the time...
Oh and all my prices were in Australian Dollars.

Is it better to have higher res and less AA and AF, and possibly other settings turned down?
