Forums - Gaming - Is Final Fantasy important anymore?

No. In fact, Square-Enix could disappear off the face of the Earth and I wouldn't care at all. All they're doing these days is shoving out remakes and generic RPGs with battle systems that could be faithfully reproduced on an SNES.

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

  • XII - Almost as bad as VIII.  People keep telling me it gets better the further you get into it but I've tried it on two seperate occasions and stopped at about 16 or so hours both times because I just couldn't take anymore.  The story was terrible and the characters were just so bad.

All right, dammit.

Roll for initiative.

it will easily sell over 5 mil on the ps360. how good it is however, we will just have to wait and see. i just hope the battle system is something like 12. i loved the battle system in 12, but not really the story

THE MOST POPULAR RPG, NOT IMPORTANT NO MORE, U MUST BE CRAZY

Thank you for your insight, Professor Capslock.

No, now that it's not going to be an exclusive outside of Japan it's overall importance has been greatly diminished. Sales will simply be important to SQ's profit margin and success or failure will have little impact on the current downward trend in Japanese JRPG importance and increased wRPG market in the rest of the world.

I though that the most popular RPG in term of sales was Dragon Quest.

I think FF is the most important game to me, that exists. I also loved FFVII, VIII, X, and XII.

What other people think, I could care less about, lol. I know what's good and what's not. Most of the criticisms come from people who have barely even played the games they like to trash. I don't wanna call them ignorant, but that would be my expert conclusion.

If XIII is half as good as XII, I'll consider myself lucky.

No IX love?

Yeah, but FFIX wasn't getting flamed, lol. I said in another post somewhere that I love every FF I've played.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Final Fantasy PEAKED at VI, so no it's not important anymore. Final Fantasy VII only sold on shock value. "Oh my god, a 3-D Final Fantasy not on a Nintendo Console? The world is ending!"

Then why did FFVIII and FFX sell 8M+

Also, FFIX, X-2 and XII with 5M+ is hardly poor sales

FFXIII will sell at least 7M on the PS3/360

Because games can sell purely on name and not quality. Seriously, the FF games over the last, what, 10 years have sucked pretty hard. They only sell because people think they're supposed to think they're awesome.

Are you actually saying that ff 8,9 and 10 and 12 sucked? Compared to what? just a week a ago i tried space siege, now that sucked, even dungeon siege sucked, diablo got boring fast, and the only good tolkien-esc game that is good is oblivion.

You are either ignorant or too one sided, cuz those final fantasy games are leagues ahead of the vast majority of games.

Well, IX was good but I'm pretty sure that was an accident.

  • VIII - worst of the whole series. The story wasn't anything special and I'm sure Keanu Reeves would do a wonderful job playing the part of Squall.
  • X - It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. I never really felt anything for the characters, the story wasn't anything special at all, and all in all the game just really wasn't that memorable.
  • XII - Almost as bad as VIII. People keep telling me it gets better the further you get into it but I've tried it on two seperate occasions and stopped at about 16 or so hours both times because I just couldn't take anymore. The story was terrible and the characters were just so bad.

You didn't find FFX memorable in anyway. Believe me, a lot of people are going to hate you as many consider FFX to be one of the Best post VII FF games.

That really isn't saying much.

The most eagerly awaited games coming to the DS, the most popular system in the world at this moment in time, have all been Square-Enix games.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your statement is not true. There were a lot of games that were more anticipated than the Square-Enix games and have had better sales. Just look at the sales data collected by VGChartz.

I think Square is important because they have popular RPG IPs, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Dragon Quest. These RPG IPs can do in Japan what Madden and GTA do for consoles in the West, Increase console sales. Actually Square's RPGs sale very well in the West also. Remember there are very few western rpg developers that develop for consoles. Most western rpg developers are more interested in the MMO market. Thus Japanese rpg developers have dominated the console market. This is why Square, Level 5, Namco, Monolith, and any Japanese rpg developer is important.

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba
