Forums - Gaming - Is Final Fantasy important anymore?

"Advertising budget."

Production value is more like it. Production value always used impeccably. Other rpgs just don't have the same amount of polish that Square almost always brings to their games. The difference with Lost Odyssey is that Sakaguchi was still living in 2001 when he went about making it. However, FFXII had already moved the bar beyond that and no other rpg since has done so. Star Ocean 4 could (I think it will get a 9 at least). But FFXIII certainly will.

What is polish refer to, anyway?

Can SO4 really get multiple 9's across the board?  It's possible but I am not holding my breath.

"How are the characters suppose to be "overly interesting"? Doesn't LO's characters drive the game's story?"

One of the big problems with Lost Odyssey is that it is kind of a throwback like Blue Dragon was in that part of its style is rather dated. It is not a true cinematic rpg but uses text to tell quite a bit of its story. In a truely cinematic rpg you would prefer to see all of it acted out at the highest production value possible for consoles at that time.

My most anticipated games:  Whatever Hideo Kojima is going to do next, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Alan Wake, Wii Sports Resort.  Cave Story Wiiware.

Well, IX was good but I'm pretty sure that was an accident.

  • VIII - worst of the whole series. The story wasn't anything special and I'm sure Keanu Reeves would do a wonderful job playing the part of Squall.
  • X - It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. I never really felt anything for the characters, the story wasn't anything special at all, and all in all the game just really wasn't that memorable.
  • XII - Almost as bad as VIII. People keep telling me it gets better the further you get into it but I've tried it on two seperate occasions and stopped at about 16 or so hours both times because I just couldn't take anymore. The story was terrible and the characters were just so bad.

You didn't find FFX memorable in anyway.  Believe me, a lot of people are going to hate you as many consider FFX to be one of the Best post VII FF games.

I agree with everything he said but his opinion on XII.

Polish refers to attention to detail. The way that almost everything in FF games makes sense in the world that they exist in.

This thread has only been up a short while and already generated almost three pages of comments. Yet another example of the fact that FF is still very much an important series.

It's important until it starts selling under 3 Million a generation.

The last few Final Fantasys have sucked comparativly but it's still got a strong brand and people will keep buying it.

I hope you don't meanthe Thousand Year Dreams.

^^ trolling. An unfounded opinion based on nothing. I already gave you reputable review numbers from reputable websites that blast holes in that kind of statement.

Don't know.
Don't think so.
Don't care.

It's important to me.

4 ≈ One

yes the series does still matter, but i think they need to get back too some of the basics like a good story and a very good battle system, also normal summons/gf/aeons/eideons and such, also not shiva transforming into a bike. they can still make good changes but they need too realize that sometimes less change and more of what ppl like is what made ff series so great in the 1st place. my favorite ff games are ff8 and ff10, also i thought ffx-2 was alot better than ff12, just my opinion though. i will get ff13 because i want too see if they can reclaim their past glory, so i will give the ff series at least one more shot before i write them off.
