Forums - Nintendo - Malstrom: Why Wii Music is Genius

Well, considering that Malstrom pegged the Wii as a success before its launch, he has a better grasp on the industry than just about any other analyst.

And since he says what I want to hear, I approve of this message.

But seriously, this looks like just a fun thing to "play" -- so as I have said before, I plan to have a copy under my Christmas Tree.

I will be 45 by that time ... but I still like being a kid (especially when my six-year-old son is around). That's why my idea of fun is I going to Disney World!

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

You're absolutely right but here's what I fear with Wii Music. Wii Music is a great idea but it should allow people to compose songs in the same way we used to do with Mario Paint (add the sharps and flats though) in a special mode. What I fear of Wii Music is that we don't get enough for our money. If they can throw in a small midi editor then I'm sold.

I can certainly understand that. Going of what we've seen and what Miyamoto's said, Wii Music seems to be more about discovering your own rhyme and rhythm in music through improvisation, instead of literal composing. It is already announced you can record and combine up to six different tracks of the same performance, and share your creations with other Wii Music. So there is a focus on genuine creation as well. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Stop with these damn lies! /end post

it's nice to see some people give Wii music the benefit of the doubt. I couldn't tell the difference between his videos though...

WM is going to be a fine game, and if it selling 5 million + copies offends you, then i hope your either joking or jump in a bloody well.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is the best Zelda title ever made.

Ah, Grampy made a good point. People talk about Wii Music as an inferior version of the other "music" games, but the thing about those games - Guitar Hero, Rock Band, etc... is they're still easily playable if you mute the game. The games are really just about hitting boxes, more than anything. Anyone who's played the hard stuff like this knows what I mean:

Compare that to Wii Music, where music creation is the focus of the game, and you'll find they're entirely different. Put aside the fact the game may be "shallow," as Wii Sports had all the same problems - you can't even move in the games (tennis, boxing, or baseball), all the game has you do is simply "waggle" when the time comes. Technically, that's a large step backwards, but people were okay with it.

Deaf people can play GH, but they can't play Wii Music.

OMG I really doubt that the writer has seen ONE Wii Music ad. The player always sounds like he is skinning a cat. Definitely no genius in Wii Music. More boredom and someone who is out of ideas and wasn't able to stop a trainwreck when the logs on the rails could be seen.

You missed the point. The idea is to play music. Not having to worry about messing up a song, and enjoying what you do. Generally, it's a game about having fun making music. Like Malstrom said, it takes YEARS to get good at an instrument. The point is to feel like your are playing a real instrumenmt, and you get to play music.

Do you live in an alternate universe where deaf people don't have fingers?

Me: Why Malstrom is a Fucking Moron

Read any of his articles. If you still don't understand why, it is because you are a fucking moron too.
Congratulations! Knuckle-dragging degenerates like you are the reason Sarah Palin can increase McCain's poll rating, despite being one of the most profoundly stupid and ignorant people ever to (dis)grace the Earth.

The use of the terms "genius" and "art" in relation to Wii Music is an insult to aesthetes and intellectuals everywhere, as are the references to Shakespeare and Philip Glass. His video comparison makes no sense either, as he claims a reproduction is more accurate than the original!

"Why on Earth would anyone want to emulate the mechanical robot way of the latter when the former lets the player use his or her soul?"

Does he not realise that Wii Music uses MIDI tunes? Could there be anything more robotic or sterile than that? Incidentally, I can only think of one game that incorporates the music of Philip Glass and it really is as close as videogames have ever come to being art. Backlash or no backlash.

Couldn't have said it better.

Ohhh please, ohhh please people. Go read his articles a little more. Then point out the one that is not sucking Nintendo's ass. This guy is a MAJOR fanboy and you should never go with people that are this biased towards something. If Nintendo decided to abandon games and sell ice cream, this guy would write an article saying how their business decision was brilliant.

Go read the stuff before wii came out (I did). It's real funny. He has all these theories of how nintendo is 'genious' and makes wild predictions about holographic technologies because we never see the graphics. Then he thinks nintendo is making a visor. He talks so much about how how nintendo is also going to innovate with graphics so much more than PS360. When E3 comes around and they show their games running on a normal TV, he changes his entire argument and says that the graphics are not important and mentions how nintendo is a genious for that.

This guy knows how to write, but he is a complete moron, just like politicians. I guess that's how politicians fool Americans so easily. If this guy can do it with all his bullshit, why wouldn't politicians be able to do the same? Just more of the same.

You have to crawl before you can walk, and you have to walk before you can run. It's easy to forget amongst the massive success of the Wii series (except Wii Chess) that these games are still Nintendo largely experimenting with an expanded audience, and feeling around for to new niches to sell to.

Wii Sports was the first experiment, trying to build an entire series of easily accessible games (Sports in this case) built of the Wii Remote's motion sensing capabilities. None of the games in Wii Sports use the cursor, it’s all on motion sensors and minor button usage.

Wii Play was made specifically to emphasize other combinations of the remotes unique features in more traditional gaming environments. You had basic cursor shooting, cursor with tilting, handle bar steering, shooting and control stick, etc.

Wii Fit served the dual purpose of introducing the balance board and it’s various uses, as well a game specifically built around some less traditional and more enticing to the non-gaming ground. (Fitness in this case)

Wii Music seems to challenge traditional gaming memes. Despite Sports, Play, and Fit being designed for a new audience, they all still follow fairly traditional gaming rules with high scores, and simple goals. Wii Music appears to be designed to avoid these kinds of things, and foster a different play style entirely. Another experiment entirely.

Sports Resort will further the original Wii Sports experiment next year by adding Wii Motion Plus to the mix.

The Wii series has constantly been using trial and error to make in roads with non-gamers. Even as the company primarily spear-heading these things, Nintendo is still very new to these things themselves, and are still learning from their mistakes.

It’s why they don’t talk about their “core” titles very much. They’ve been doing those for decades now, and feel like they’ve got them down. But touch generation games and the Wii series are still something their new to, and want as much feedback as they can get.

Maybe you could link to these old articles. His oldest Wiikly article dates to August 21, 2006, after E3.

Also watch out with the "knows how to write" stuff. You're totally undermining one of the big arguments against him!
