Forums - Gaming - (Dreamcast) Sonic Adventure 1 vs Sonic Adventure 2: are both worth a buy?

Hey guys,

as some of you know I bought a Dreamcast from ebay last week. Unfortunately I´m still waiting for it (nothing spectacular, it just takes some while) so I decided to watch out for some more jewels on ebay. Todays candidates are Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and I´d like to know if they are both worth a buy.

Here´s the interesting part: I played both games on Gamecube already. A good friend of mine bought Sonic Adventure 2: Battle back in 2002 and we loved it, especially the little Chaos. When Sonic Adventure was ported over to the GC (as Sonic Adventure DX) he bought it as well but the framerate often dropped in the GC version of the game (IGN said the DC version didn´t) and the graphics felt dated after playing Sonic Adventure 2 so I never really got into the game. I still have Sonic Adventure 2: Battle here, though, as my friend forgot it months ago and never wanted it back.He lost DX, though.

My questions:

Sonic Adventure (1):

- are the DC graphics really better? (framerate)

- Does the game really feel that dated today?

- Is the Chao part as good as in part 2?

- Is the overworld annoying or not? (Some reviews said yes but many gamers seemed to enjoy it)

The game goes for 7-10 Euro on ebay (+2 - 4 Euro shipping) would it still be worth it?  I´m not sure but I think it somewhat HAS to be part of your DC collection, doesn´t it?

Sonic Adventure 2:

- Besides GBA - GC connection, are there any features exclusive to the GC version of the game?

- Is multiplayer (Races, Kart Races, etc.) available in the DC version?

- Has the Chao Garden been ported 1:1 in the GC version?

The game goes for 9-12 Euro on ebay (+ 2 - 4 Euro shipping) but I loved it back in 2002 and I played the GC version yesterday and I still liked it... I´m not sure if I should buy it as I can still play the GC version but on the other hand... maybe I could give it back to my friend?

Any suggestions? Pretty tough question if you ask me.

Hell yeah... both are great IMO... the DC version does have the mini Chao game on the VMU

I have them both for DC and for GC and the DC version's is better...

This, alone, pwns Sonic Adventure DX on the GameCube.

I think you should only buy Sonic Adventure for your Dreamcast. I thought the GameCube port was badly done, and the extra Chao features were not worth it in my opinion. You get the real Chao experience with Sonic Adventure 2: Battle though, and you don't need to buy the Dreamcast version for this one because it doesn't even have half of the extra features that the GameCube version has (multiplayer especially).

So, final verdict:

- Get Sonic Adventure (DC) just for the heck of having a Sonic game on your Dreamcast (and Chao Adventure on the VMU is so damn funny!). You might get stuck sometimes in the Overworld (not knowing where to go), but it was still one of the best parts of the game;

- Don't get Sonic Adventure 2 (DC), it doesn't even have multiplayer in it (no robot battles and stuff) and the Chao Kindergarten is not optimized in this version of the game (if I recall correctly, it's not even there!). Sure, it has Chao Adventure 2 for the VMU, but the GBA connectivity with Sonic Advance is so much better anyway. With that said, the GameCube version has the most stuff in it.

If you want, you can still buy both though because they're stellar Sonic games in my opinion.

Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

Both are great. I only have them for GC so I can't compare to DC.

Both amazing.

I traded my gamecube version of number 2 though. I'll be buying another one in 2009.

i thought they were great, so i think they should both be bought, but its ur decision, so choose wisely.

I've finally beat both games completely on the GC in the last two weeks and I am baffled that anyone could like the overworld in the first SA or the Chao Garden nonsense. Feeding those stupid viechers for hours and hours just to get a handful of emblems sucks.

You just don't understand the depth of the Chao Garden, 'is all. It's not meant for regular people to understand the beauty of the Chao world (mating, caring, feeding... aaahh, beautiful). Chaos Chao for the win! ^_^

Wow, I'm gonna stand alone on here and say these games ain't so hot. I'm a huge DC guy and I just picked up a 'Gear on eBay, but these games are really not very good. The first one is the better for sure, and at its release it looked amazing. But the gameplay and camera were off, and the overall experience spawned the current "any Sonic in 3d sucks" movement. Still if you don't have any Sonic games for your DC these would be the ones. Imagine what it was like to fire up a brand new DC with SA1; sure do miss the Dreamcast.

Wow, you guys actually answered. I´m impressed! Even Rol! :p

What I heard, though, is that the first game didn´t age all too well that´s why I´m not sure.

Oh and Rol, those "Viechers" are really cute! If they were in the new Sonic game I´d definitely buy it.
