 Proving and disproving theoretical physics is not exactly progressing the human race. Progressing our understanding of the universe yes, but that won't really impact us as a race. And Newton's Laws of motion & Universal Gravitation, the Pathogorean concept of a mathematical proofs and platonic concepts, Barrow's fundamental theorum of Calculus, Maxwell's electromagnetic theory, or any number of other discoveries that people of the day asked "how does this help me?" and scoffed because they were unable to see the future benefits.
