 Proving and disproving theoretical physics is not exactly progressing the human race. Progressing our understanding of the universe yes, but that won't really impact us as a race. The expriment are really interesting but we would be no worse off not having the answers to these questions currently.

 

People said that about General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics too. 

 

And Newton's Laws of motion & Universal Gravitation, the Pathogorean concept of a mathematical proofs and platonic concepts, Barrow's fundamental theorum of Calculus, Maxwell's electromagnetic theory, or any number of other discoveries that people of the day asked "how does this help me?" and scoffed because they were unable to see the future benefits.
