Forums - Sony - Sony is phasing out the 60 gb to be replaced by the 80gb

There are some topics I try to avoid, this is one of those, but I think the arguments here are ridiculous. Can any of you see in the future? No, you can't. We don't know what will happen with the 80GB when the 60GB is gone yet, so stop arguing about it.

You think Sony will keep the 80GB at $600 even after the 60GB is sold out?  The only PS3 system will be packed with Motorstorm?  Really?

I'm pretty sure it's only bundled with Motorstorm because of the new maps coming out next month.

No one knows the future, but this is common sense.

The reason why they cannot say that the 80 gb will be the new 500 dollar sku is because they are selling it as a limited edition with a game. They don't want to hamper the sales of that SKU by encouraging people to wait.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

2. That $500 60GB PS3 won't sell out any time soon, because unlike a certain other company, Sony produced a lot of consoles.

What company is that Microsoft? Becuase last time I looked Nintendo was planing to ship more consols this fiscal year than Sony.

 Sorry for derailing the thread.

Other than that I do agree with ckmlb (for once), because I think it would be stupid to let the PS3 stay at the 599 USD when the 60GB is gone. Of courseI thought releasing a consol for 600 USD was stupid too, so who knows mayby I should shup up

Buy it and pray to the gods of Sigs: Naznatips!

Ok, let's use the Console Brand vs. Model argument.

Sony has maintained the PS3 price while Microsoft keeps raising the price of he 360 by that argument.

It seems the mods need help with this forum.  I have zero tolerance for trolling, platform criticism (Rule 4), and poster bad-mouthing (Rule 3.4) and you will be reported.

I believe 80 gb version will stay on $499 price tag. All this rumor is on purpose. They want to move as many units in this short period as possible. New version isn't a big deal (few gb more and game - definitely not worth $100 combined) so many people will decide to hurry up (because they are unsure regards price)... then Sony will announce 80 gb version for $499. Smart. Everyone is happy.

apparently they fail to understand extra controller, game, and 20 GB... its really a good deal as if you thing without the two others the 80Gb would $529.99 taking a guess so a controller and motorstorm for 69.99. Thats a great deal for a great racing game and controller.

Also once the 60GB runs out the 80GB will be $499 just wait and see, they will probably release a 100GB version in it's place lmfao.

The pack doesn't include an extra controller, and why would it? Last time I checked, Motorstorm doesn't have splitscreen multiplayer.

Dropping the price of the 80gb after the 60gb is gone most certainly would be common sense, but how often has a company done something that completely came out of left field? I certainly hope they drop the price, or they'll cede another holiday season to their competitors.

I've checked around with the other staff at PSU and theres a general belief that there is indead a second controller in the package. Your comment on MotorStorm doesnt totally matter as they can add split screen in with an update like they did Time Attack mode.

You really need to seperate what Sony is actually saying from what you wish they were saying.

Sony has only stated:
-60Gb is $499 until is sells out as it has been discontinued.
-80Gb with reduced backwards compatibility (~60% vs. ~100%) and a 5 month old game (8 if you count japan launch) is $599

The actual Sony press release mentions nothing of an additional controller, mentions nothing about the controller having rumble, and mentions nothing about future price drops. In fact the box shown in Sony's official press release shows only one controller: http://tinyurl.com/23lkrh

Would it be smart to drop the price once the 60Gb are gone, yes.
Would it be smart to include rumble in the SixAxis, yes.
Would it be smart to include a second controller, not so much as many people play alone and controller sales actually make Sony money.

Has Sony in any way said they would do any of those things, no.

I am done with this thread. Its ridiculous really. I have never seen a case where there is direct evidence contradicting a posters statement and the argument continues. Kaz Hirai says in a video interview that the 80GB will stay at the $599 price. Jack Tretton said live on G4 that that they PS3 didn't have price cut. Of course I guess it only matters what Sony execs say, when it supports YOUR view of what should occur with the PS3. I mean you are cherry picking executive to support your point Karraker is Hirai's subordinate. So until Hirai rescends his statement what he subordinates say mean nothing. Besides Karraker is PR and he is simply trying to put out a fire. The man in charge of the Playstation brand is Kaz Hirai. What Kaz says goes.

The basic contention you and other seem to have Ck is that Sony wouldn't keep the 80GB at $599 because it wouldn't make sense. Sony has made continuous bonehead mistakes with the PS3. So a common sense move by them CANNOT be assumed. The 80GB model may go down to $499. I am not saying that it won't, but the 60GB stayed at $599 for several months after the 20GB was discontinued. Also, you are speculating. When Sony the head man at SCE says differently.

BTW Windbane, your comment about Sony actually making systems was pointless. They aren't selling them. Nintendo has outshipped and outsold them.
