Forums - Sales - LittleBigPlanet vs. Wii Music: Battle of the Casuals

By definition this thread fails.

If Little Big Planet is casual, it will sell nothing, as it is on a $399 system.

If Little Big Planet is hardcore, then the comparison to Wii Music is invalid.

"You are entitled to your opinion, but it's wrong. I wish you all the Lairs, Hazes and Gundam Crossfires in the world."

Don't know about that but games like Folklore, Heavenly Sword (best motion control of any game so far in this gen), Uncharted, MGS 4, and R & C Future do kick the cans of any Wii Fits, Wii Sports, and Mario Kart Wiis that are on the market as far as being excellent games and worthwhile experiences are concerned.

My most anticipated games:  Whatever Hideo Kojima is going to do next, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Alan Wake, Wii Sports Resort.  Cave Story Wiiware.

Mario Kart is not awesome. First off, Its Game Rankings and Metacritc scores beg to differ. Low 8's. And I've played it at Best Buy. Its graphics are pretty much last gen and when one thinks of all the fuzz in the game, I would say except for some of the effects such as the way that that dips in the track feel, it's not really even that much of a leap graphically beyond the N64 version.

Starcraft hit it on the head, pointless comparisons. If it's for casuals Wii Music is definetly gonna be a winner, . If it's hardcore it will fail because, like my friends (anecdotal, I know), people didn't spend so much money for a game like the ones peoplle on the Wii play.

Off-topic again:

Stopped reading after the bolded part, you obviously have no idea how the game play and the general quality.

As for the whole PC thing. How can you spew that PC games are all the same old same old when consoles are just ripoffs from what was on the PC years ago? LBP's level cosumization? PC had it back in '98. Online Multiplayer or Co-Op? PC had those since DOOM. Everything that's "ZOMG THIS IS AWESOME AND INNOVATIVE!!!" on the consoles has been done years before on the PC. As I said earlier, every game other than JRPGs, fighters (computer doesn't support more than 3 keys at a time), and sports games fails majorly and are games that take PC gameplay and try to put on a few twists. I have yet to see a GOOD FPS on a console, or an RPG that is not a JRPG. The only other gametype that has fallen out of the hands of the PC since the 90s are Adventure games, like all the LucasArts games. Currently adventure games like Zelda and Metroid are better than what the PC has to offer and I will concede that area, but everything else that the 360 and the PS3 have to offer is crap compared to the PC counterparts. Give me Thief any day over any of the MGS games, give me Diablo 2 over any God of War (GoW is more of a fighter, but still true), and give me Half-Life 2 or Unreal Tournament2004 over any Gears or Halo or Killzone or any other shooter you can think of, solo or multiplayer.

Looks like you conceded every genre that matters. Fighters, (J)RPGs, and (Action) Adventure games. Fans of Halo and Gears and the arcade shooters on Live (Geometry Wars, Ikaruga) might not concede what you said about console shooters.

I did concede that PC's did have 1 and 1/2 genres of good games. Real-Time Strategy and MMORPGs both of which are actually alright as long as they are made by Blizzard.

^ Whatever gets you off, man. Those genres have not seen anything great since Mortal Kombat II, FFIV, and OoT came out. Everything since then has been a rehahs or just new bells and whistles.

(I can do the same too, see?)

@Paul_Warren: Eyetoy is Sony's highest selling game (besides GT) in the last 2 gens. I suppose it's time to scrap the God of War's and Ico's for more "casual crap," hm? Seriously, what do you think Nintendo will have the Zelda team doing then?

Also, stop using metacritic. It doesn't make sense doing so - here, I'll take your favorite games to explain why:

Wii Sports (76) > Folklore (75)
Wii Fit (80) > Heavenly Sword (79)
Metroid Prime 3 (90) > Uncharted / R & C (89)
Zelda:TP (95) > MGS4 (94)

"Excellent games" and "worthwhile experiences" are up for people to decide on their own, not you. The Wii Series is accessible to more people, hence, more people will find it worthwhile, and it will sell more. It's as simple as that. Nintendo will not stop making core games either, as long as there is a market for them.

I was just about to point that out...........beaten to the punch......again!

Okay, I'll use Game Rankings then. Let's see how that works out. Most people here say its more accurate anyway.

1.) Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3) (97.419)
2.) Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) (97.405)
3.) The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii) (94.271)
4.) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PS3) (93.682)
5.) The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (PS3) (93.054)
6.) Super Smash Brothers Brawl (Wii) (92.922)
7.) Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3) (92.531)
8.) Rock Band (PS3) (91.394)
9.) Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition (Wii) (91.128) (Also available on PS2. The PS2 version has a Game Rankings score of 95.649 -- The PS2 version is the definitive one)
10.) Okami (Wii) (90.314) (Also available on PS2. The PS2 version has a Game Rankings score of 92.529. The PS2 version is the definitive one)
11.) Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (PS3) (89.884)
12.) Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii) (89.602)
13.) Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (PS3) (88.598)
14.) The Orange Box (PS3) (88.548)
15.) Burnout Paradise (PS3) (87.798)
16.) Bionic Commando: Rearmed (PS3) (87.364)
17.) Resistance: Fall of Man (PS3) (86.740)
18.) Ninja Gaiden Sigma (PS3) (86.655)
19.) Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Wii) (86.632)
20.) Unreal Tournament 3 (PS3) (86.564)
21.) GRID (PS3) (86.424)
22.) Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 (PS3) (86.387)
23.) Madden NFL 09 (PS3) (86.288)
24.) MLB 08: The Show (PS3) (86.242)
25.) Zak and Wiki: Quest for Barbaro's Treasure (Wii) (86.085)
26.) Virtua Fighter 5 (PS3) (86.040)
27.) NHL 08 (PS3) (85.904)
28.) Skate (PS3) (85.893)
29.) Super Stardust HD (PS3) (85.650)
30.) Boom Blox (Wii) (85.320)
31.) Soulcalibur 4 (PS3) (85.140)
32.) Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution (PS3) (85.090)
33.) Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas (PS3) (85.062)
34.) Super Paper Mario (Wii) (85.018)

Well at any rate, I think you can see how poorly this comparison is going for the Wii by this point with 24 of the top 34 games for each system being PS3 games while only 10 are Wii games.

At any rate there are another 20 Wii Games and 44 PS3 games to go before we get down to Wii Sports and its Game Rankings score of 76.562. Including Heavenly Sword which has a quite respectable review score of 80.659 by comparison. There are 23 PS3 games with scores between those of Super Paper Mario and Heavenly Sword and only 7 Wii games in that range.

There are 12 Wii Games and 20 PS3 games that come between Heavenly Sword and Wii Sports with a Game Rankings score of 76.562. It seems like the only thing that you were right about is that Wii Sports has a higher score than Folklore which only has a Game Rankings score of 75.825. There are no Wii Games and 3 PS3 games that have a Game Rankings score between Wii Sports and Folklore.

To put it bluntly, anyone can see from these numbers that the PS3 simply decimates the Wii as far as the number of high quality games for each system goes and that the Wii simply does not deserve to be selling in the numbers that it does.

In conclusion, according to Game Rankings there are 75 PS3 games with a Game Rankings score between 75 and 97.419 (Grand Theft Auto IV the PS3 version which is the highest rated game of this console generation beating out the 360 version by .778 of a point) while there are only 36 Wii games in this range.

You put a lot of effort on your claim that Wii games are crap. I just read the last sentence because I don't have the time to read all that.

Basically, according to you, since the average ratings from video game critics are better for the games on PS3 are better than those of the Wii, people shouldn't buy the Wii. I think you put too much faith in those critics.

It's really easy to see why Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit and Wii Music sells better than a lot of PS3 games. Just ask youself why it sells better and you will get the answer (hint: it reaches a new, broader audience).

What makes you think Sony won't advertise this to the casual market? They have already invested in marketing for LBP and I'm guessing as we get closer to release LBP will have comercials. Sony is also looking to make Sackboy their mascot if the game gets good reviews.

It doesn't work like that, but first, let's back up.

First thing is stop using the word casual. What everyone is saying and meaning are very different things. Casual describes gamers who play lower-mid games, but more so as a small hobby. This may be someone who only plays for ~2 hours a day and plays games like Guitar Hero and Halo. What everyone means is non-gamers. These are people who do not play videos games, but it can also describe someone who just recently was introduced to games. These people play mainly low tier titles.

Now, the two games are in totally different leauge. Wii Music is not causal, but for non-gamers. This is why it is so easy and you can't mess up. It's just for the fun of playing an instrument. LBP is an upmarket game. What people forget is this: the game is about sharing (sending and receiving stages) which is definatly not for non-gamers. Heck, online in general is something that non-gamers won't like. "But what about Mario Kart Wii" you say. Mario Kart Wii wasn't totally focused on online. LBP requires it. In order to playb the real game, you need to be able to send and receive these stages. Now, while there is a main game, it still may not be a bridge. There comes into question the controlls (for instant, if there are too many items to menipulate like the jet pack, it might scare bridge gamers away), and how hard the levels may be (if memory servers, the developers boosted on the length and difficulty of some levels).

Now, the problem with you argument is that the PS3 is not at a mass amrket price. It is too expensive to reach the audience you think it is suppose to reach. Advertising it as a "bridge game" would be dumb. There isn't even anything to bridge on the PS3, so what's the good of making a game that casual, hardcore and non-gamers all like if the latter doesn't have the console.

In conclusion, LBP is not the bridge game people hope it will be. It wasn't designed with that in mind. When you first saw they game, did you think "Wow, my mom might actually like this"?. No, becuase you were focusing on the trading, graphics, and physics. These are the bread and butter of this title. It was never meant to be a bridge game. Someone thought that Sockboy might appeal in the same way other mascots have.

LBP does not require online.  Stop stating that lie.  It is a strong component of the game but one that can be completely ignored just like in MKWii.

There are two buttons needed to play the game, jump(X) and hold things(R1 which i believe activates the jetpack).

As stated before the infinite respawn with plentiful checkpoints make it more accesable than NSMB and it's limited life based system.

Bridge games don't recieve any special type of advertising as far as i'm aware.  All the earlier titles you mentioned as bridge games didn't get special bridge game advertising.

If you never make a game that they can enjoy then they will never see a reason to own your console.  Nintendo was simply smart enough to sell the game with the system from the start so the reason was quite obvious.

PS3 isn't a mass market price.  It will get there just as the 360 did.  It would be nice to already have a library of interesting games for those who finally do decide to pick up the system when it is finally at that pricepoint instead of getting to that point and then slowly starting to release the games. Especially if casual and hardcore players will enjoy them in the meanwhile.

Ps. the first videos I saw focused on multiplayer. 2d platformer with multiplayer piqued my interest.  Finding out about the creation and sharing is what drove me over the edge enough to want a PS3 now.
