Forums - Sales - PS3 gets it's First JRPG in Japan This Week -Predictions for HW & SW - 22/9

It's first true test in Japan?

You act like the PS3 hasn't already gotten a lot of sequels to popular japanese games.

First true JRPG sure... but first True test? That's just revisionist history.

No clue what it'll sell. Usually timed release = lower sales numbers then a silmaltanious release probably would... but then the 360 does have some real low numbers in Japan.

Mmm guys, why go all other the place?
- SRPG are JRPG
- SRPG are a niche genre of JRPG, hence they sell more
- JRPG doing the same numbers or less on PS3 than on PS2 are sometimes called bombs when they obviously cost more to make than on PS2. This is the case for Valkyria, but obviously not for Disgaea or Fire Emblem (or any Wii titles that cost in line to last gen to make)

On topic, I really have no idea how much Trusty Bell will sell, as it's the first of its kind on PS3. Enchanted Arms doesn't count (it sold more than on XB360, but not really relevant).

Disgaea 3 sold like half want Disgaea 2 sold in japan first week.... also Nipon Ichi studied the PS3 for an entire year before working on the game.  They probably still broke even considering graphics... but it's probably didn't really make them any money.

They have to be happy, they already announced they are working on a new PS3 project (will probably be announced during TGS).

Or they don't want to waste the year they spent studying the PS3.  Are you going to waste over a years work studying the demographic to move to another system which may or may not have the other half of your demographic?

Not to mention how long it would take to learn another systems arictecture.  Better to stick with what you know in such a case... where as the more games they put out, the more the year spend studying it declines in cost per game.

Disgaea 2 sold 150k in Japan....

Valkyria Chronicles' number... we are talking about SEGA... when was the last SEGA game that made a buzz in Japan... :/ not to mention, I don't think Sega has made anything close to VC nor were they known for making SLGs like VC... VC's system is not even "japanese" like... it's much more Western friendly than your traditional grid-based SLG... the shooting, free roaming, and 3rd person alone makes the game a little "detached" from Japanese fan base.

Also remember that Enchanted Arms will come out in the middle of an incredible dry period for the PS3 in Japan (and for the other consoles to a lesser extent). There probably won't be anything major for the PS3 in Japan for months. Afrika and Battlefield: Bad Company beat most people's expectations for their first weeks in Japan, and I think Eternal Sonata can do the same. Sure, it flopped on the 360, but so do lots of games. I'm going to go with 70k first week, but it's a pretty bare bones estimate.

Should do upwards of 150k easily. A 2.36 million userbase on a platform that hasn't got a SINGLE JRPG of notable quality.

This should be a shoe-in.

Finally we can truly agree on something. This man is speaking common sense.

how much does eternal sonata for 360 sold in japan?

It is very easy to find. Second-hand I saw the other day at 3000 yen, still pretty high. The thing is tho, this port is almost a new game.

How about Valkyrie?

Both Valkyrie and Disgaea 3 bombed, and I think Disgaea is far more popular than Eternal Sonata.

both valkyere and disgeae sold well in japan.

Yes, you are right, they did!

People need to realise that SRPG's and JRPG's are both roll playing games, but the difference is, appart from the battle systems, that SRPG's never sell as well, as they are just too niche.
