Forums - Sales - Would the Wii be as succesfull with a PS360 ?

Wii would still be winning, in fact it would be even further ahead.

Without direct competition for it's traditional market (core gamers) the PS360 would only be competiting with the PS2 and would be totally happy with that.

With no direct competition the PS360 would still be selling for $4-500

It would be a blessing for developers though. They'd love it.

Well I think we're looking at it from differnet perspectives.

- If the console didn't sell well Sony & MS could price cut even more aggresivley than the respective consoles are now , Possibly even achieve a price cut 30%-50% below that of the Wii.

- The signifant percentage of software would be exclusive to one console , the biggest franchises on one console Halo 3 , GT5 , MGS4 the games that define the PS3 and 360 on one console.

- The PS3 has an install base of 120 Million , a signifanct percentage of that is composed of the traditional gamer . Keep in mind that both consoles main SKU's (60Gb and 40gb respectivley) haven't reached the ideal price point for mass market penatration $199.

- Blu-Ray penatration would have been far early and quicker than currently so we would have the consumer not only purchasing this cheap console for games but also for their multi-media needs.

No, I think theoretically if this Sony & MS team did have like $10 billion+ to burn, they would compete pretty well with Nintendo. Especially considering they'd be able to drop the price to like, sub-$200.  Heck, with that kind of money they should have no problem dishing out like 40 million arcade units for free, lol...

Of course, the Wii would still overtake the thing once they run out of money.

That doesn't make sense , the PS360 would have no direct competitor yet the Wii would have more market share . Your claiming the Wii would be even more competetive than it already is yet the HD consoles would have no direct competition.

I claimed a while back that the PS3 was not in direct competiton with the Wii ( i still believe it isn't) but there still is a crossover in their target demographics when it comes to the traditional gamer.

They wouldn't be able to justify that kind of expenditure to shareholders. This miracle console would never be cheap enough to compete, especially with Blu-Ray under the hood in 2006.

if I remeber correctly the gaming industry is growing faster than both the music and movie industry , it's worth billions . Why wouldn't aggresive price cutting for the sake of securing marketshare not be worth long term profitability ? .

With increased blu-ray penatration the cost of the components would go down ( this is already happening with the PS3 ) the console cost isn't going to remain constant obviously .

you knew what answers these blood thirsty animals were going to give you. i stand mute, pluss lets sau the 360 didnt exist and it was just the ps3 with al the 360 games releasing the price of the elite version and whatever whatever, the Wii would be in 2nd.

I think it would be a better world to live in, lol.

As for your question, assuming similar launches, 50/50.

However, that includes both companies first party games.

That said, if I'm wrong, it certainly isn't in favor of the PS360 that the truth would lean. It is very likely that the Wii would have curbstomped any competitor this gen, adn there's no way in hell that some magic hardcore console would outsell it. It is likely that if there was a PS360, it would actually decrease the userbase those two consoles share now.

It's not about functionality, it's about marketing. You can't just add them together. Both console have huge faults. If it had a BR player, it would be too expensive, it if had RRoD it would garner poor PR.

That said, I think if the PS360 had no RRoD, no Blu-Ray player, and sold for $300 with all the games available currently on the PS360, assuming similar launches, it could very well share 50 percent marketshare with the Wii. If the Wii was second, it would be close. A ton of people would buy the Wii no matter what Sony or Microsoft do.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Wii would not stand a chance.

Oh, were we supposed to assume this was based on reality? With the Sony & Microsoft thing I assumed this was just in a dream world, but...

In reality, the console should sell a good deal better than the PS3 or 360 individually. This may make it feasible to actually make a profit off the hardware (assuming its build is closer to the X360, not the PS3) - think of an X360 with no hardware problems, the Sony brand name, and all the big HD games. Since the sales would be very strong, it wouldn't be worth taking huge (PS3-like) losses to compete with the Wii. Still, even with all this, I'd guess the console would be a close second.

If it's PS3 hardware we're talking about (Blu-ray, Cell), I think the Wii would have a much larger lead.
