Forums - Sony - If Apple joins the game console business, will Sony leave?

Its all about the expenses involved in the console business. Sony lost about $-3-4 billion and Microsoft lost about $6-7 billion. If a forth huge corporation like Apple comes in, it makes competition all the worse. Just from a financial standpoint, Sony seems to be at the most disadvantage in being able to compete.

because they lost less in their gaming division with being very profitable previous 2 gens.... uh.... huh.....

yeah if you look at strategies it doesn't work out.
Sony is trying to take over the livingroom
Nintendo wants the gameroom
MS/Apple want the Office
Sony will not have competition with Apple.

Sony isn't anywhere close to quitting. They are not Money starved either. Among their recent purchases are Minolta and the NEC Optiarc business, which is now under complete Sony control. Both businesses were purchased in the recent two weeks. Trust me, if they can buy like that, they can sustain losses in the SCE division... entering the fray would only hurt Apple.

you answered your own question and pointed out how limited this argument is.

Microsoft launches first with powerful hardware and buys exclusives.

Nintendo launches whenever they feel like it and has the best homemade exclusives around.

Sony needs to pick a dimension of competition and nail it hard. Apple entering the market would be in the same boat as Sony only with less experience.

No as MS learned it takes many years to build up a new and loyal fanbase. Sony and Ninetnedo have huge ones and MS is growing it very nicely though it cost billions and almost 10 years.

Sony isnt going anywhere

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

Apple has $20 billion in cash and has over 20 years of selling computing hardware. They will probably make an interesting console with great online components and be willing to sell at a loss to their huge fan base. Anything with the letter "I" seems to sell for them from I pods to I phones. Will Sony be willing to go another round against both Apple and Microsoft seeing that both those companies have tons more cash to burn than Sony does at the moment? They were the big dog against Nintendo and Sega in 1995 but the tables have turned now if Apple joins the race.

One more thing Sony is into controlling the living room not just the gaming console.  They make TV's. home theater, blu ray players the console fits nicely into their overall corporate startergy.

What's my name?

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Sony won't leave. And Apple won't make a dedicated console or handheld. iPhone/iPod Touch is all you are getting.

Just cause MS can ineptly force their way into the industry with money and marketing doesn't mean it has to be like that for everyone.

Sony went from nothing to 1st with the original Playstation over the dominate Nintendo and stiff Sega competition.

If Apple had a novel, inticing product and reads the market correctly they can enter easily without lossing money.
