^ How did consoles do that? Wouldn't it be the developers just failing?

I don't see how it's developers failing. id is doing what they can outside of throwing more money into M$'s face. You have to remember that if anyone can optimize a system's hardware it would be Carmack and his team. UT3 was gimped because PS3 and iI guess soon the XBOX360 crowd are used to FPS games that are slow with horrible controls and weapon mechanics. If UT3 was anything like UT2004 then it would be unplayable by most players on consoles save the ones that are the most experienced, and even then I doubt they would enjoy it that much. There's just things you can do with a PC that you can't do with a controller easily(example: double jumping while strafing and having a dead on aim on a target at the same). Also FPS games on consoles feel like molasses compared to Quake and UT on the PC. It's not developers failing, it's consoles creating restrictions.

How did controls for a console mess up the controls to a PC?

He's going to say, "because it had to accomodate consoles". Then you're going to reply, "well that's their laziness because they could have spent more time and optimized for each platform". Following that, Onyxmeth will quote the entirety of that discussion and say, "I agree with LOL MATURE. Wow that's a first".  He will then go on a small one to two paragraph rant basically repeating what LOL MATURE said but trying to spin it to sound like it isn't a blatant copy.

Strange how this is the first we've heard about a game being cut down for the 360's media. I suspect that this is less of an endemic problem, and more the tech-heads at id being lazy with compression techniques.

The producer and developer of Blue Dragon stated this and also a rep from Square Enix. They stated this back in 2006, I believe. Microsoft responded by saying that better compression techniques would remedy the problem. You can acutually google this and find the sites that reported the problem.

“Blue Dragon ships on three DVDs, making it bigger than any Xbox 360 title to date. According to Sakaguchi, the game required compression technology to fit onto the three disks. In uncompressed form, the game’s data takes up over 30 Gigs of space!”

Compression is not the answer.

This is so funny. You guys can complain all you want, but remember parity goes both ways. When PS3 fans were screaming for parity in multiplatform games Sony instituted a rule that PS3 and Xbox 360 versions must be the same. I would pick Microsoft did the same and for the rest of the generation - a good 4 years away there will be no advantage in Blu Ray for 85% of games released.

At least what Sony did didn't result in games being gimped......are you really trying to side with M$ on this one?

Multiplatform games will be released on the Xbox 360 and PS3 which are equal. It doesn't mean jack if the PS3 has Blu ray because the Xbox 360 does not. Game developers will seek to bring equality and Sony and Microsoft will implement rules that are to their best advantage. If Sony was all roses in this why did they make a rule which states that no game will be certified on their console if it is not equal with the Xbox 360 version and if it is released later it must have extra content?

ahh but it does.  Think of it like this; if this rule is so, where multiplat games must be equal, the developers are going to start blasting on MS.  It won't make a difference for 3rd party games, but when Sony starts dropping amazing 1st party games or simply 1st party games with tons more content than any multiplat or 1st/2nd party MS game, developers are going to start complaining.  Eventually these Sony in-house games are going to show why theres a difference in the systems..and when the consumers start to notice and ask developers why, are they gonna lie?  Nah..they're going to say it's because of these royalties that Microsoft is so greedy about..

Of course this is speculation..I know if the scenario played out like that and I was a 360 owner and not a PS3 owner, and I saw the amount of content the 'others' were getting, I'd start to get a little upset.

I wouldn't doubt the entire process went like this:

Carmack: "Hey Microsoft, can you guys waive the royalty fees for extra disks?"

Microsoft: "no"

Carmack: "How's about let us mark this game as HDD requried?"

Microsoft: "get out of my office"

Carmack goes to Sony

Sony: "What do you want?"

Carmack: "I'd like for you to fund and market this game in exchange for exclusivity"

Sony: "Ok....go on"

Carmack: "Thing is, Microsoft doesn't have a storage medium required to make this game as we envision, so unless you fund this project, we'll have to gimp every other version so we can make more money"

Sony: "This Rage game would be a technical showpiece for the PS3... and there's no reason to gimp a perfectly fine game... I'll accept! fill out this paper work and we have a deal"

Carmack: "Thank God, This is a dream come tr-..... wait, this contract says that we have to hand over the I.P to Sony corp."

Sony: "uh huh and?.... don't you know? we don't fund new franchises unless we get the I.P rights, you know, so you guys don't go multi-platform in the future and screw us over later"

Carmack: "well, we at Id games, usually keep the I.P for ourselves since we have such a rich history and important role in the industry...so I was thinking... how's about letting us keep the Intellectual proper-

Sony: "Get the fuck out of my office."

Carmack: >_<

Six months later in an interview....

Carmack: "I'd say the only thing that makes the PS3 better than the 360 is BluRay, but in terms of programing and graphics, the xbox360 is better in every way. With that being said, because Microsoft planned so poorly for the future, we actually have to gimp the PS3 and PC versions to accomodate the Xbox360. This is the reason why the 360 version will look worse than the PS3 version, but the PS3 as a machine still sucks."

^^ Brilliant.   But if I was Sony I wouldnt' have let him talk so long on his "id is great" spiel before kicking him the fuck out.

And after the last FUD comment, there'd be ninjas waiting in his bedroom.

very console maker limits publishers in some way or another. It's an ugly part of the business that started a long time ago and will not change. Every console maker wants their games on a level playing field. Does it suck? Yes. Is this news though? No. ID is not some upstart developer that doesn't understand this. They've been around a long time.

Here's why it's not Microsoft's fault and why ID went the wrong direction in forcing Microsoft's hand. Show me any interview with any member of ID where they state that Microsoft has a gun to their head and are requiring a 360 port of Rage. There obviously isn't one, and it was ID's decision to develop a 360 port and gimp the game because of it. Is it necessary for a game to be on the 360 to be successful? I'm sure most would say no in most cases, and it's still true here. They have options and they chose the worst one for gamers. 360 owners should have either been S.O.L. or ID shoud have sucked it up and ate the additional royalty costs. We don't know how costly it really is, so it's hard to guage what "too costly" means.

What's funny is, had ID decided to announce that the 360 would not get the game because of this royalty cost, I can damn near guarantee that would have successfully forced Microsoft's hand into lifting the fee and thus would have solved the issue.

^^^ this

It's a shame id feels that it needs to limit the other versions but what you speak is the truth. As much as I respect Carmack tt's also a shame it's been so long that id has released a game worthy of our attention.  I hope Rage is that game but with all the public outbursts like this it doesn't leave me with a lot of hope.

PS3 vs 360 sales

Why can't they just make the best game they can based on each platform?
