Forums - Gaming - Sony NEEDS household names!! YOUR OPINION WANTED!

Sony owns alot of IPs.

Without further ado, here is a list of all new titles with all new franchises that Sony has in development:

The Current / New EXCLUSIVE Franchises include:

1. Little Big Planet

2. Resistance

3. Infamous

4. Uncharted

5. Killzone

6. MAG

7. White Knight Story

8. Heavy Rain

Now I want everyone to look at that list.  Do you see how foreign half those names sound? I'm not saying this is a bad thing, however, these are all brand new IPs.  Whether you think its good or bad, is up to you, however, its definetely encouraging that the company is taking a new direction.  However I have to ask once again, is it a good idea to not follow up on your old successes? See the list below:

Older Sony Franchises

1. God of War

2. Twisted Metal

3. Dark Cloud

4. Rogue Galaxy

5. Socom

6. Wipeout

7. Gran Tourismo

NOW HERE IS THE BIG Question:

Which franchises are going to be a success?  Which franchises can you throw away?  Which franchises are salvagable?

I think Sony is doing good with the new ip's. If they do well, then you have more Sony AAA games. Example would be GOW - recent (past 5yrs) ip and now an awesome franchise. Hopefully - games like uncharted and WKC pave the way for great franchises for Sony. Which I think it will :D

I haven't heard of half of those older "franchises" either, so how will they help.

What I'm saying is, they need to reviatlize them and market them properly.  They have ever genre under the sun.  They need to get on the ball and crack some titles out.

Why isn't buzz and singstar not in Current/New franchises when Yakuza, Killzone and R&C are in that category despite having a history with other sony consoles.

Also, Buzz and Singstar have games out on the PS3 already, Yakuza and Killzone don't.

Well there is already a Buzz and Singstar out, and more coming I believe..... those two franchises together are the third biggest reason for the huge European userbase of the PS2 (after GTA and PES/Fifa).

Gran Turismo and God of War are in development, and WipEout is coming to PSN soon right?

Of the rest of your second list, 8 I haven't heard of and the rest wouldn't make a huge impact sales wise even if they were marketed correctly.

Nintendo has a number of "household names" because they have had many successive quality titles within the franchise... Most of the games you mentioned only have 1, maybe 2 titles, and were not huge hits... to build household names out of them they would need time, and quality sequels... and even then they wouldn't become famous until PS4 or PS5.

---

I put "household names" in inverted commas by the way because not even Nintendo has any proper household names other than Mario, ie names people other than gamers know about.

I asked my mum to see if she recognises any game based characters from some pictures, the only one she knew properly is Mario. Even Sonic I had to tell her the name before she recognised him, and the same with Lara Croft (though I suspect mainly famous from the films) She didn't know any other characters even if I said the name.

Current franchises that I believe are proper household names - Mario, Pokemon, Wii (sports/fit), Brain Training, Nintendogs, Tetris, Lara Croft/Tomb Raider, Grand Theft Auto and to a lesser extent Gran Turismo.

Not even huge franchises like Final Fantasy or Halo are actually household names.

I'm not trying to make a list war :D.  I just want your opinion on the franchises and what you think can be succesful and what can be salvaged?

Fair enough. I just thought it was a little odd that you would call those old and those new. (another one I wanted to mention was ICO and SoTC being from the same series or at least world).

Anyway, does Sony really need to make household names/brand names/mascots?

I actually like that they are making new IP's to compete with MS, as it shows they aren't resting on achievements of days gone by.

The problem with making household names/gaming icons I should say (I agree with TWRoO, very few household names out there) is that you risk alienating 3rd parties by forcing them to compete with your own, I mean look at Nintendo, If I were a 3rd party I would not touch the Wii as I would be forced to fight against Nintendo's creations whom would have the advantage of iconic status and obviously hardware advantages.

Look at microsoft, in the xbox era, no one wanted to touch the FPS genre because of Halo, and those that did, on any platform were almost always burnt to a crisp.

Even within Sony from previous generations, Gran Turismo ensured that very few realistic racing sims came out and even fewer that succeeded on any console (forza one of the very few exceptions).
