Developers don't really utilise the 50GB disc fully , 10 X the capacity probably won't be needed for the next gen at least.

2 that I know of off the top of my head...LBP uses 40 gigs, MGS4 uses 50 gigs..

By 2012, games won't reach 500gigs or even close to that.  All the consoles manufacturers need to do is make sure the console can use UP TO that, and they'll never have to worry about space restrictions for developers.  PS4 and XBOX 720 will probably approach 100 gig games though if I had to guess, especially with a MGS4 taking 50 gigs.  Hideo could have probably packed more onto that disc had he had the space.

Very true Phrancheyez...just think of how long the cut scenes in MGS5 are going to be...

With these new 500GB games we can look forward to uncompressed Music and Graphics, very long movie/cut scenes and 1 or 2 hour long play times which will cost upward of $50+ million to make and will be hailed as the pinnacle of artistic work.

I just hope they can make reader quick enough to read all of that data, because as we have seen with the pS3.... I don't want to install games to my harddrive in the Next Generation.

I think cartridges are a possibility for the next gen. due to the speed and the advances in Flash/Nan Memory. By 2012 they should be able to hit 100 gigs or more , but as always price will be the ultimate factor.

I sense major amounts of win in this post.

Also...before everyone starts talking about how much space LBP is using...let it be known that it is just a bunch of uncompressed tutorial videos.  That's great for the game...but it is by no means proof that we need that much space...or that developers will utilize it to its fullest potential.

Dear god, just hearing that a game could be ven 50 gigs astounds me. I mean, I think rocket science would take up less space. So far the best games out there are no more than a few gigs, I don't want 40 gig games, and even less do I want 500 gig games. The only way to fill that would be to include all the pre-rendered movies in there, the source files or something like that. I don't know about my console game space, but for my PC I have no game, unmoded, that takes up more than 6gigs, MAYBE 8. And I mean, some of these games look better than any of the HD games so I really don't know where the other 42+gigs are going to fill up a bluray.

What's amazing is one of the most critically hailed games of the year, Braid, is 144MB.

InstantAction.com games - which are browser based and awesome (they have a free browser based FPS called Legions, which is very good), and that's pretty small too - despite being a 32 player Tribes sequel.

You posted this like 15 minutes ago. Not everyone can respond in that ammt. of time.

There are other formats similar to this already on the market (HVD) that store even more data. Either way, it's good for the format wars, knowing that future technology is pretty good.

this might be true but how many people can afford a drive that costs $20m and discs that cost $5m each? not many.

Braid is HD, yes.

Consoles Owned: XBOX 360, Wii, DS and PSP.

Thats more useful as a storage backup to the system's hard drive than it is for software medium.

Hou much would games cost on those? (perhaps not much more. mfctured units, but then the resorces spent on making a game that big....)

I think this is unimportant..

the way the industry is shifting right now HD and 50GB won't matter

not for now at least...now=5 years after this and more

hmm...it seems like too much..WTF are you gonna fill that disc with?
buy the ps4 for 20mil dollars...and then the PS4 games collection for 2mil

the 500GB disc has ALL the release 30 titles of the entire system on it?
