Forums - Sony Discussion - 20 million PS2 on store shelves out there?

David Reeves said they had shipped 127m through 2007. For first half of 2008 they've shipped 3.9m.

That would make 130.9m through June 2008, the last financial quarter data was available. I think the 140m was a mistake, and should have been 130m.

In the same link he says PSP had shipped 34 million through 2007. For first half of 2008 they've shipped 7.14m, That makes 41.14m through June 08, which matches the 41m mentioned.

140 million units sold (as of July 15, 2008) according to wikipedia

*SIGH*

Sony contradicts themselves, as BKK2 said. By March 2007 Sony had shipped 117 million PS2's http://vgchartz.com/worldcons.php

Does anyone think they shipped 23 million PS3's during April 2007 - June 2008? :S

It's a bit hard to imagine that the PS3 will eventually beat out the PS2's nearly 130 million units lifetime sales, but SCEE president David Reeves believes this is going to happen. Backing up the claim, Reeves stated: "The PS3 install base is growing faster than the PS2's was at this point in its lifecycle." Currently, the PS3 is around the 13 million mark in worldwide sales after having launched back in late 2006 -- that's ten percent of the PS2's current lifetime sales and six years to play catch up.

“The PS2 has sold more than 130 million units in nine years and is still going strong. Where is Xbox now, or GameCube,” he (Kaz Hirai) said, referring, respectively, to Microsoft and Nintendo's previous generation of game consoles.

And to top it off, we have 120 million sales on the seventh aniversary dated 10/26/2007:

More than 120 million consoles sold worldwide

Since its release in North America on October 26, 2000, more than 120 million hardware units and more than a billion units of software for PlayStation 2 have been shipped worldwide, making it the best-selling gaming platform ever released.

I could probably find more, but I think enough information is here to settle the matter.

And yes there's a lot of PSPs on shelves, small handheld boxes get set at higher stock levels. If the DS wasn't selling so fast that it couldn't build up a huge inventory you'd see similar there as well.

3.5 million? I'm skeptical.

Here's a link from someone who send me a PM
http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps2_e.html
Basically, through Mar '07 (when FY 06 ends) PS2 shipments = 117.89FY 07 = 13.73Q1FY 08 = 1.51Total shipped (as of June 30th) = 133.13

Thanks for the links, you're actually proving my point, 10+ million PS2s out there on shelves and warehouses?

Well i've read everybody's posts, and i'd have to think they've shipped over 130 million, so probably sold just about 130 million, not the 120 million vg puts it at.

^ Oh yes, the PS2 is supply constrained / sarcasm

psp number looks intersting, 3 millions unsold ones out there is a bit too much in my opinnion. even for small portable devices shops are not stockpiling them that much, else a price drop would hurt them too much. so unless over 2 millions are lieing around in sony warehouses somewhere i don't think that the numbers fit togetehr taht good.
