That report was useless... 1, Sony might lose the "war" this time, but I dont belive that they will give up their dreams of controlling the living room. 2, Nintendo only sold 18 million consols or something last gen, and they were profitable, so can Sony become. Sony also has the PSP, not the powerhouse as the DS BUT it is still selling. 3, Just some days ago the Inquirer wrote that the Wii were slowing down in Japan...o yeah still sold out. That anybody read their stuff make me wonder....

Nintendo make money off GAMES, i.e. distribution/sales. Sony makes money off LICENSING / MANUFACTURING games for other companies. Sony has very little in the way of IP they actually make money from - it has always been this way. That is why Nintendo are the #1/#2 publisher in the world - and Sony is around #10. Sony need to sell / manufacture a LOT of games/machines to generate a reasonable profit. Its economies of scale, cost-cutting over time, etc. The PS2 and PSP are still very profitable for Sony - so those consoles would have to die off quickly, before the PS3 really bothered Sony. Sony also makes a lot of money off TVs and other equipment - so even if their games division does flunk, there is very little chance of them getting out of the industry. ... For Sony to "fall" out of the console industry: 1/ PS2/PSP sales would have to dry up - quickly, and almost completely 2/ Issues would need to arise complicating the manufacturing of PS3's (even further) 3/ BluRay would have to comprehensively lose the next-gen DVD war 4/ 360 would need to dominate in Japan (or Nintendo or another company release a product which directly competes with the PS3). 5/ PS3 sales would need to drop to about 10-15% of the market. 6/ Software sales would have to be terrible. 7/ Sony would not be able to cost-cut any further. 8/ The rest of Sony would have to lose lots of money, putting pressure on the games division. Its very, very unlikely - I would say impossible. The "Inquirer" is one of the worst media outlets I have ever seen/read.

The Playstation brand will not die. Neither will Xbox. Both companies have too many vested interests riding on their respective brands to kill them off, money-losers or not.

shams i agree with you there. 1) Bravias are the no 1 selling HD TV sin teh world. 2) Casino Royale alone earned SONY 400 million dollars...SONY is doing extremely well in the film division. 3) SoNY shares are at an all time high since 2002......take that skeptics.....SONY is projected to make huge profits this quarter. 4) The upcoming OLEDs have a constrast ration of a MILLION :1..............clearly there cant be any competition. 5) BLUE_RAY is pounding HD_DVD camp all over. BLUE-RAY has major support from most of the big companies. ALready AUSTRALIAn stores have stopped selling HD_DVD drive. 6) ps3 is projected to dominate Europe and US come MARCH . With GUNDAM MUSOU releasing on MARCH 1st you would ofcourse expect the hardware sales double for some weeks atleast. 7) The software sales for ps3 has improved with time and ofcourse would reach 5:1 after march no doubt.

I agree, both Sony and Microsoft will probably be here for the long haul, even if they lose this generation, the same way Nintendo survived the last two generations. All three companies have what it takes to absorb loses for at least two generations, me thinks. Nintendo is the greatest publisher/developer so you are pretty much guaranteed to have games on your Nintendo system, even if party companies are not there. Especially now that they have understood what the non-gamers and casual customers want. I would even go as far and say that the Wii will be extremely successful, DS-lite like successful, largely because of Nintendo first party titles. to them, gaming is Nintendo and Nintendo is gaming. Sony on the other hand, can just market the PS3 as a multimedia machine, the same way they are doing with the PSP. So long as hardware sales are poor to decent(not "dead" level kind of sales), they'll be satisfied. Software sales would be disappointing, but they will make a profit on the hardware, however small it is. They also has money, not as much as Microsoft, from other divisions. They will try and try again to dominate your living room, hardware-wise. Microsoft has money. They can buy exclusives left and right. Even if the console tanks, they WILL absorb the loses, just so Sony doesn't dominate your living room. They probably don't care as much as Nintendo when it comes to the actual games themselves. They also want to dominate your living room as much as Sony.

6) ps3 is projected to dominate Europe and US come MARCH . With GUNDAM MUSOU releasing on MARCH 1st you would ofcourse expect the hardware sales double for some weeks atleast.
No.

Umm no. Some cheap as shit from walmart is the leading. Bravias are arguably one of the best though.
2) Casino Royale alone earned SONY 400 million dollars...SONY is doing extremely well in the film division.
Ok that must be the gross earned figure. But, yes their movie business is still good.
3) SoNY shares are at an all time high since 2002......take that skeptics.....SONY is projected to make huge profits this quarter.
sony overall is yes, but the point of this article was not, sony going bust, just closing their gaming division. Which is not something I think will happen, after all it took Sega, a much smaller company, quite a few failed hardware designs for that to happen. However, their gaming division is projected to lose a lot of money, that coupled with the huge lose in batteries (laptops on fire anyone?) and the R&D costs for Blu-ray, cell processer, closing of their lower priced electronics division last year. They have had a difficult time recently. Also, I do believe the last financial report I read from Sony was that they were going to lose money this year due to the reasons I just mentioned plus the R&D of the PS3.
4) The upcoming OLEDs have a constrast ration of a MILLION :1..............clearly there cant be any competition.
Again, difference between sony as a whole and gaming division in regards to this article.
5) BLUE_RAY is pounding HD_DVD camp all over. BLUE-RAY has major support from most of the big companies. ALready AUSTRALIAn stores have stopped selling HD_DVD drive.
This is still up in the air. HDDVD and Bluray are nearly the same tech. They don't look any different on screen. HDDVD is cheaper overall and may have a good chance of pulling ahead and/or the market itself will decide on a dual format solution, I think more likely.
6) ps3 is projected to dominate Europe and US come MARCH . With GUNDAM MUSOU releasing on MARCH 1st you would ofcourse expect the hardware sales double for some weeks atleast.
HA you and this March BS. If it does become a system seller, it will not even push it past Wii or DS sales. Thus no immediate saving grace. As I mentioned before, can't wait for June and my 6 month review.
7) The software sales for ps3 has improved with time and ofcourse would reach 5:1 after march no doubt.
what the hell are you talking about. PS3 software sales have pretty much remained constant. It has the lowest attach ratio of all three systems. March will be no different.

Might be true in USA, and the rest of the EU. Most of us in Sweden is buying cheap no names.
2) Casino Royale alone earned SONY 400 million dollars...SONY is doing extremely well in the film division.
Nice movie nice profit but what has that with the gaming industry?
3) SoNY shares are at an all time high since 2002......take that skeptics.....SONY is projected to make huge profits this quarter. 4) The upcoming OLEDs have a constrast ration of a MILLION :1..............clearly there cant be any competition. 5) BLUE_RAY is pounding HD_DVD camp all over. Do not know anything of this, but do you have to write MILLION, and ....... or !!!!! al the time? I
6) ps3 is projected to dominate Europe and US come MARCH . With GUNDAM MUSOU releasing on MARCH 1st you would ofcourse expect the hardware sales double for some weeks atleast.
Projected is not the same as will. Who has projeted this dominance? I mean they have a large gap up to Xbox360 in USA and EU, even Wii has sold a lot. Even if the ps3 doubles it wont results in much more than it sold barley the same amount as Wii.
7) The software sales for ps3 has improved with time and ofcourse would reach 5:1 after march no doubt.
Which sales number are you looking at? PS3 software numbers is crap, but if you still is here after marsch (see you could write a marsch without caps), we can do some calculations and see if you or I was correct. Just to make everything clear I don't think that sony will leave the gaming market, I disagre with the articel above.
