Forums - Sony - Playstation 2 Memory Card Costs back in 2004

Sony's always big on charging way more for peripherals than it costs to make. As anybody who's had to deal with waves of quick-failing PS1/PS2 controllers can testify. If it seriously costs anywhere near the $30 they used to charge to make one of those failure-prone DualShocks/DualShock 2s, I'd be amazed.

I never owned a ps1 but after heavy use my ps2 controllers stood up pretty well. The only exceptions I can think of are the rumble which didn't work that well and the shoulder buttons that sunk into the controller (though the shoulder button issue only happened after many intense frequency/amplitude sessions).

According to the following site:

It only costs Sony £187,989/£56,246=£3.34 per memory card while Retailers sold it for £30 back in 2004 or so. (Essentially, Sony was charging £11.06 to retailers, thus earning over £7 per memory card)

Thanks?

no problem

You had better luck than me, then. I went through about 4 DualShocks and 5 DualShock 2s. Of them, 2 of each still work, and that's largely because I don't use them. Ironically, a third-party wireless mini-DualShock 2 I bought has stood up far better, surviving even being dismantled and reassembled without failing. Whereas my PS1 and PS2 controllers liked to break when I glanced at them wrong.

Stop throwing them into walls. :) I had 4 Dualshocks (2 PS1 and 2 PS2) and never had one break on me. Strange. But seriously, talking about cost of DS is irrelevant, look at the cost of 360 controllers or XBOX controllers, controllers just cost alot.

Plus, Nintendo is the king of over charging for the extras, amiright?? uh uh?? :P

I own all three current consoles and a great gaming rig, now thats out of the way.

This space Reserved for the Nuggets of Wisdom dropped by Bladeforce:

"Why post something like this when all it will get is PS3 owners blinded to reality replying? BOTH THE PS3 AND BLUE-RAY WILL NOT LAST 3 YEARS! TECHNOLOGY CHANGED TOO FAST!"

"is it Wii FIt that has sold as many as PS3's sold? Thats a LOL Look at the total sales of software is it just me that sees Nintendo titles hitting 10m+ and you say they arent making a difference? Another LOL!"

"Hell, with all the negative hype Sony spin, people just aren't interested cost is too high and to get the true HD experience (1080p, 7.1 surround) you will need a $1000+ system. THAT IS GOING TO DO IT IN A RECESSION! PS4 will not happen"

That's the thing, the worst I did with my controllers was having the audacity to use them. Frequent symptoms included the left analog getting too loose to use, a random face button dying on me, a select few of the L/R triggers no longer responding, the L3/R3 buttons getting sticky, and the left analog getting so wonky that it frequently got stuck in the "up" position and held itself there by what I can only assume was sheer force of will.

And Nintendo's mark-ups on accessories are nothing compared to Sony's, believe me. I still recall being irked that GameCube controllers and memory cards were more affordable than PS2 ones back when I kept having to replace PS2 controllers and get yet more memory cards due to games that used an eighth of their total space per save.
