Forums - Gaming Discussion - JRPGs...do you prefer turn based battles or real time?

Turn-based is where its at. I dislike the stress of countdown or "real" real-time battles, and frankly the turn-based boss fights are almost always much more interesting.

FF12 was not turn-based. It had unpausable countdown timers, like many FF games. I suppose you could claim that its not entirely real-time for that reason as well, but if I had to stick it in one of those two buckets... I'd have to say its real-time, and not turn-based.

Any game which requires the pressure of a timer in its combat system is "real-time". Real-time is too difficult if it has too many options, and thus it often ends up too simplistic ("button masher") for my tastes.

I haven't played a Real-time based game yet that demanded me to do more then just spam the attack buttons.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

What are examples? Is starcraft real time?

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Turn-based, and half turn-based like eternal sonata

Either I can enjoy almost any combat system as long as the leveling/experience system is good.

Can love bloom on the battlefield?                 Proud supporter of this gen!!!

real time in turn base, like the FF10 system, if u understand wat i mean

Turn based for JRPGs

Turn-based with active time like FFVII where if you stand there trying to decide what to do for 5 minutes enemies are still hitting on you. I also like FFX, battle system where you see the order in which people are going to hit depending on the abilities/spells you use.
