Forums - Sales - Can Xbox 360 Arcade out-mainstream Wii?

That's certainly the thinking behind Microsoft's decision to drop the price of the basic Xbox machine to $199 in the States. Aaron Greenberg, director of product management for Xbox 360, is quoted as saying, "Over 75 percent of all console sales historically were sold below $200... We know that there's tens of millions of PS2 owners who bought their systems when (the PS2) hit $199."

Sure, Aaron, but then PS2 wasn't completing with Wii - a brilliant machine designed specifically for an immense untapped market of casual users; it was competing with Dreamcast - a cult machine designed for people who wanted to play really good arcade conversions. And Chu Chu Rocket.

However, add the updated UI, the music games, the Netflix deal, and the avatar system, and you've got a compelling family entertainment solution for half the price of a PS3.

Or you've got a cheapo, HD-less version of a hardcore piece of kit that'll just confuse non-gamers looking for a Wii Sports clone. Wow, price cuts are confusing.

No, because in the end its not the price as the primary or even secondary factor for Wii's success. Its Wii Sports and the general library/features the Wii offers. This is proven by the fact that a very large % of Wii buyers will pay 50-75% more for the product off of ebay and craigslist.

I don't think that ever happened for the 360 and only for a few weeks for the PS3 at launch.

The Wii is a Pop Culture item. Something that the PS3 and 360 are not.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Conservatives:  Pushing for a small enough government to be a guest in your living room, or even better - your uterus.

I second that

It will reach 21-24 mln units. But please don´t call wii a brilliant machine. The GC, the N64 and SNES are offended. They were brilliant machines, on par with the best consoles of their era. Call the wii a brilliant idea, or concept, because this what got the wii the position of the HOT CONSOLE of this gen.

PLAYSTATION®3 is the future......NOW.......B_E_L_I_E_V_E

Arcade has no chance stealing customers from the Wii, people want the Wii not 360 at cheaper price which does not offer much to those that are interested in NIntendo console, it does not have Wii-mote which is a key to the success. Plus it does not offer games that might interest non gamers.

Wii will sell amazingly in the holiday season, and you can call it brilliant machine

LOL. Wii is a phenom and Nintendo still holds all the cards.
