Forums - Gaming - I bought killzone. Impressions and more to follow.

If i would have to "review the game" (I haven't finished it though. But by my current impressions, it would be something along the lines off..

(doing this IGN style)

Audio: 6.8 out of 10.
Lipsync and voice acting works well. It gets tiresome to hear the same few lines over and over again though. When someone speaks their voice tends to dissapear if you turn your back to them. Even though i have it setup as "stereo" As said previously the feeling of war is sort of dim (once you kill a wave of enemys) and it needs more ambience.. and epic music like the music in the menu :P

Graphics: 9 out of 10.
The game looks stunning for a playstation 2 title. Even though it's often not fought in huge locals, some of them actually are pretty big. The game has animation work that can rival new games coming out today and at times there is even like a sort of "motion blur" when you run.

Gameplay: 8 out of 10
The gameplay works, i've remapped some controls, but you can do that however you wish. Luckely. It's a standard shooter but what it does, it does well. The only drawbacks i have, are the "on rails" (although it's not that bad most of the time) and it can be hard to melee someone sometimes, i would also really have liked a jump button, but that's just nitpicking. It could also use a cover system.. fortunately killzone 2 will give it that. the AI is also pretty good. Atleast if you go for a more close orientated battle like i like too.
Another great thing is the different chars you play as. It really mixes it up and makes the gameplay a lot more variated than it would have been had you just played as one. Some people call it a bad thing but i really think it adds to the game. I especially like "rico" who has a big chain gun with a "rocket launcher" thingy underneath. And the assassin (can't remember her name) who has a silenced sub machinegun and a knife so you can run up and cut people.

Presentation: 8.5 out of 10
The game opens with a big cutscene full of epic and win, the menus are easy to navigate (except you can't press start to exit the pause menu) Hud is easy on the eyes and overall it presents itself really well.

Lasting Appeal: 8 out of 10
Well i've only played the singeplayer so far. It seems like it was made so that you easily can go back and play your favorate parts again. The multiplayer is both online and offline And with bots. So in either way you are probably set to play for a long time before it gets boring.

That's my opinion on it :p Hope it's of any use.

Okay.. To catch up on the story before the release of killzone 2, i decided to grab killzone 1. Unfortunately i could only find it used. It makes some cutscenes a little weird (minor audio lag because of scratches i take it) i would note that i'm playing it on my ps3 though, as my ps2 is currently at my moms place.

Alright. First off.. the intro trailer really tries to pump you for the game.. you get a bit of story along with some HURR and a massive army .. stuff like that. Then they show some battle which looks an aweful lot like killzone 2. :P no really. At that time it was clearly cgi though.

When i got into the game, the first things i noticed was:

Load times are quick (maps are only 10 minutes long though, but a level is like.. 40 mins ? i'm guessing a little.. i don't play very fast XD)

Animations are fluid and amazing for a fps. Especially for a ps2 game. In that way this game was way ahead of its time. It even surpasses cod4 in some aspects. (I'm talking purely animation here. Not graphics as a whole.)

It's also by far the best looking FPS i've seen on the ps2. It really looks outstanding for a ps2 game. (Ofcourse it can't beat GOW2.. but it comes near it.. atleast in my opinion. Difference being that gow is HUGE and this is on a much smaller scale) One of the things that impressed me was the fact that each char lip sync everything he says. I know it's common now, but for a ps2 fps ? not so much. (i did play cod2 on it yes)

It's very linear. You have 1 path. You can barely move around on that path (Atleast so far, but i'm only like.. 40 mins into the game.) It seems like there could be big areas in the game. But well see when i get further.

I haven't noticed any slowdowns yet, ofcourse this doesn't mean they aren't there.. i just haven't seen them yet.

AI... well.. lol :P it's a lot better than i thought.. they actually managed to kill me 1 time already. (This was mostly because i wanted to melee them.. which btw looks awesome)

Your coop partners are dumb as heck though.. they run in your way and ignore your presence completely. I've accedently killed 1 or 2 already. One of them called me an arsehole. (I might have thrown a grenade in his direction afterwards)

Overall i wouldn't call it smart.. but smarter than i had thought.. much smarter.. and a lot smarter than some other ps2 fps i've played. Naturally it doesn't come close in .. well most ways to a current gen game. With the exception of the animations. I'm really surprised it's so ahead of it's time in that depatment.

I also noticed it has the "cod style regen" Mostly. You have a healthbar and it regenerates over time. There are also medic packs though.

Overall impressions so far .. Pretty good.

Can't compare with a brand new shooter.. but it's decent.. especially concidering it was made for the ps2. (so far atleast)

I think i might get bored of the game rather quickly if it doesn't spice things up though. In all honesty :p.. i'll play it a bit more and update. I also got a hold of devil may cry 1 which i'll give a spin later.

EDIT: oh yeah... and the controls are weird.. you throw grenades on L1.. and crouch on L2.. Not that i mind too much.. but i have thrown a few grenades by accident

EDIT: Second Level Complete.

I got killed again. Damnit !

Every time you die, you respawn at your last checkpoint. Usually this isn't too far away though.

IF anyone haven't played the game and have any speculations or questions they want asked. Go ahead and i'll try to answer the best i can.

AUDIO

Voice acting: Pretty good. Only issue is that for some reason the voices completely dissapear  if you turn too much around. And you can sometimes hear through walls .. in a weird way. Not that you can't hear through walls. But it might be louder facing the wall (a lot) then facing the door to the room. (For instance)

There are a lot of atmospheric sounds but i think it's lacking a little something .... perhaps more background music ? .. or more sounds ? i'm not entirely sure.. they can get a little annoying but it's really a none issue.

The actual music is epic though.

I still think the controls are a little weird but i'm getting use to them. To lazy to change them anyways XD

The cutscenes are well performed.. and it's very satisfying running up and melee an enemy. I do it as often as possible. If there are too many enemys though, you have to be strategic about it. Running from pillar to pillar and ducking.

Actually playing this so far has gotten me alot more hyped for killzone 2. I really wasn't expecting such a good game after all the negativity you hear all over the place.

after each level there are cutscenes explaining a few things. I've now gotten to a part where i can actually choose between two chars. Gonna be interesting.

Have to say this.. Knifing people in this game is freaking awesome. You can walk up behind them and cut their throat. Or throw the knife into their throat from a "short distance" and then run up and pull it out. Damn XD.. you can also just cut them normally XD

When it comes to the controls, I quickly remapped them to be more suitable to how I play.

Better graphics than Black? That game was a looker

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

I rented KZ back in the day and i never beat it, i think i made it to some swamp before i gave up on the game. It was really hard from what i remember.

"Your coop partners are dumb as heck though.. they run in your way and ignore your presence completely. I've accidentally killed 1 or 2 already."

I'm pretty sure this happens in just about every FPS, i played the arcade mode in CoD4 yesterday and was watching them, they use zero Ai and seem to have no idea where you are, and use scripted events to handle everything. The sad thing is they are better then the enemies.

Good first impressions. It's a long time ago, but I still think it's a pretty good shooter

Yeah. I completely agree. I just heard that the AI was horrible so i thought i would speculate on why this might be.

Uncharted (though not a fps but a shooter) has some really intelligent AI though.. the best i've seen.. for both your enemys and your coop partners. They are very aware of all their sourroundings.

I though killzone was a generic shooter , but KZ2 is looking pretty good.

Actually that's one fps i haven't ever gotten around to playing. Might have to pick it up sometime.
