Ys Book I & II is an action-RPG for the Turbografx CD from 1990 that is a remake and combination of two earlier games from 1987 and 1988; it was recently released on the Wii's Virtual Console.  The series is quite popular in Japan, but has achieved only limited popularity in other regions.  Book I & II is noted for being one of the better games in its genre at the time of release, as well as for its excellent soundtrack.

You fight by simply running into the enemies; if you attack them head-on, but are weaker, then you will likely suffer damage.  The idea is to attack them slightly from the side or from behind, keeping yourself safe but damaging the enemy in the process.  It sounds overly simple, but the movement is very quick (and even has a "fast" setting if you want to crank it up even higher), and if you get cornered by some strong foes you may find yourself dead very quickly.
