Forums - Nintendo - Sony does what Nintendon't!

Usually bundles are used later in a console's lifespan to increase sales or when there is a slump. There's no reason why nintendo should have a bundle for the wii this year, it's very unlikely they will be able to manufacture enough consoles to meet christmas demand WW. We've already seen the DS, GBA, GC, and N64 had bundles.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

I think a Conduit-themed Wii would be pretty neat and would be a nice way of waving something under the "hardcore" nose.

Not that Nintendo needs to, it'd just be cool.

"I mean, c'mon, Viva Pinata, a game with massive marketing, didn't sell worth a damn to the "sophisticated" 360 audience, despite near-universal praise--is that a sign that 360 owners are a bunch of casual ignoramuses that can't get their heads around a 'gardening' sim? Of course not. So let's please stop trying to micro-analyze one game out of hundreds and using it as the poster child for why good, non-1st party, games can't sell on Wii. (Everyone frequenting this site knows this is nonsense, and yet some of you just can't let it go because it's the only scab you have left to pick at after all your other "Wii will phail1!!1" straw men arguments have been put to the torch.)" - exindguy on Boom Blocks

As much as I hate to say it, I don't see Nintendo being as ahead as they are if it weren't for Wii Sports. That's the game that got the majority of the world hooked on the Wii initially.

But, Nintendo doesn't really need to actually market any of their products with third parties. They have a lot of first parties that can easily fit the bill. So putting Zelda, Pokemon, Nintendogs, or even just the Wii logo on things makes it so that people will want them no matter what. I had even contemplated getting the Pokemon DS because I thought it looked cool. But I'm happy with my DK robo armor that i have on mine instead...

I think it'd be doing about as well as it is now, except they would have made less money.  The Wii outside of Japan is more expensive, and the price is justified due to Wii Sports bundled in.  If you mean selling Wiis at $250 without Wii Sports, I can see the problem.  Of course, it's possible Wii Sports was forced onto the consumer to spark previously uninterested family members' interest, but it's hard to tell how much of an impact that would make.

Don't forget the PS3/Spider-man 3 Blu-ray player bundle. That's something the Wii or 360 can never do. Well maybe the 360 can do a 360/DVD movie bundle. No, that would be retarted.

Really, the only thing Sony does that Nintendon't is make poor investment decisions. Though that almost goes without saying, as pretty much EVERY business makes worse investment decisions than Nintendo. Seriously, I've never seen any company as over-cautious as Nintendo. Even when they "lose", they still win. Dr. Doom would be jealous of their ability to turn anything to their advantage. And to Sony's credit, I've seen many that make far worse investment choices than they do.

How does Nintendo win even if they lose? I mean no disrespect to Nintendo but after the 64 gen and the GC gen if they weren't on top this gen I think NIntendo might have ended up like Sega.

What? Nintendo always made a profit from the N64 and GCN so why would they go the way of Sega and go software exclusive? Their consoles always made them bucketloads of cash.

The answer is simple: Nintendo sells every hardware very fast, without giving free software.

Sony NEEDS to give free games to atract more people.

You speak like this as if Nintendo wasn't last generations bitch.

Can I be a bitch please?? I want to earn the same kind of cash Nintendo does.

Though not officially, many 3rd party wii titles have been bundled with the wii here.

Includes:
Resident Evil 4
RE: UC (with zapper)
No More Heroes
Madden

Incidently, here's another thing sony does that nintendon't, they make expensive consoles that cause massive losses that require a "ten year plan" to return a profit.

You speak as if Microsoft can actually make consoles...and aren't going to be right beside Sony as the "bitch" - if not dethrone Sony all together. This is between the adults baby MS, as in limited to companies that have actually proven themselves worthy console makers. Let daddy Sony and mommy Nintendo talk...go back to bed.

Aww come on! Sony is this generation's loser.

They're losing heavily - perhaps more than Microsoft will in the end.

They've lost their domination.

They've managed to break into the handheld market, but not to sell games. They're probably losing money on it.

And in reality, Nintendo was more succesful than Sony in 6th generation too, as they made a lot more money. Still, Sony had more sales, so a tie that goes perhaps slightly in Nintendo's favour there.

The last, and only generation, Sony was really thourougly the winner, was the 5th generation.

By making a profit even on underperformers, of course. N64 and GameCube, while not market dominators, still earned them more than they spent on them. Perhaps not a gigaton more as the Wii is doing, but it still allowed them to go well over break even. Sega tried to play hardball, taking losses on hardware in hopes of making it up on software sales when they couldn't afford to. That's why Sega failed: not because their hardware sold too few units, but because they required too many games sold to break even. Nintendo has avoided taking that risk ever since the Famicom almost sunk them during its launch year due to a defect.
