Forums - Gaming - How did RE 2 on N64 compare to RE 2 on the PS1?

The title.

Was it a complete port? same quality? did anything get lost in the port? And if so was it a deal breaker?

I'm just curious to know if I ever find a used cartridge or if the game ever comes out for VC. Should I take the plunge?

Wikipedia:
A Nintendo 64 version was also released in 1999, ported by Angel Studios (currently Rockstar San Diego). While it was the only port of the game that did not feature the Extreme Battle mode, it did contain some console-exclusive features. The most prominent was a series of additional in-game documents known as the "EX Files" that connected the plot of the game with the other games in the series (including the then-unreleased Resident Evil Zero). Other features include an item randomizer, violence control, first-person controls and new unlockable outfits replacing the ones from the previous versions. A Hunter from the first Resident Evil is also given a cameo appearance. The game supported the Rumble Pak and Expansion Pak. The N64 version is notable due to the compression techniques that the developers were forced to use in order to fit two CD-ROMs worth of data onto a single 64MB cartridge. It also featured, for the time, a high resolution display of 640x480 compared to the PS1 version's 320x240. In fact the game would change the resolution at each camera cut based on the number of enemies in the room. Many enemies took more processing power, so the game chose lower resolutions. When all the enemies were defeated, it would run at 640x480. The N64 version also featured surround sound, not found on the PS1 version, using the Mosys system from Factor 5.

The only difference that I remember is that the cut scenes had to be compressed, which in turn made them a bit more pixelated. In fact, I think that the in game graphics were a bit better on the N64 than the PS1, but you have to keep in mind that the former came out quite a bit later than the latter.

Just kiss the tip.

Or you can just go on to Wikipedia and get the answer from those people. I played it and that's all I noticed lol.

It has better controls (instead of tank controls, you actually move in the direction you point the analog stick), slightly better graphics, but lower quality FMVs. It has some extras over the other versions, but it's also missing a couple extras I think.

If you are a big fan of RE2, I would say it's worth it.

The graphics were superior in that they had bilinear filtering but not actually higher resolution. The sound was worse, but everything was present.

I'd have a look at the reviews on gamefaqs.com for a more detailed run down.

Oh, I stand corrected. From memory, it was considered a "very good" port.

Basically:

Fleshed out story
More options
Better resolution (When l no enemies onscreen)
And amazing compression techniques.

Loading was a little faster on N64, but not as fast as other games. I also remember that the scary moments (like the licker breaking into the mirror room) were 3X louder in the N64 version.

This intrigues me. It was the controls that prevented me from getting in to the RE games originally.
