I was happy until

1- Snake didnt kill himself

2- Big Boss died........v....e....r.....y........s....l.....o....w.....l...y

I AGREE. Kojima's is retarded for not having snake kill himself.

Exactly....as bad as it sounds, i wanted him to do it...it would have added weight to the story and seen him go down as a hero till the end (preventing the spread of his virus)

Watching Snake die would have been much more emotional and worthy than watching Big Boss keep falling over

I thought it at first.. until the thing with big boss etc... Look.. it makes snake... so much more human.. that he couldn't finish himself off. Really. It adds a whole new dimension of depth to the game.

This is what seperates this stuff from normal heroes.. cause snake was scared too... afterall "he's no hero" mearly a human.

Yeah but....Snake was gonna just pop himself in the head. Big Boss just wouldnt die! I wanted to go to bed, and every time he fell over i was like 'right thats it' but the old geezer kept getting up again!

Dead Snake FTW

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

BRAVO!!

Brilliant response as thats what Kojima wanted to show through the final bit!

Too bad the story wasn't great. So much wasted potential.

what are you talking about ? the story was brilliant !

Planescape: Torment, Deus Ex, The Longest Journey, Mask of the Betrayer, Beyond Good & Evil, Grim Fandango... these have brilliant stories, not MGS4.

MGS4's Story

Pros
- Some of the characters are great
- Highly emotional

Cons
- Uninspiring writing
- Archaic storytelling
- Excessive use of cutscenes
- Bad implementation of thematics and specific knowledge
- A lot of clichés

I compare MGS4's story to Spiderman 3: Fun to watch, but won't give you a lasting appeal.

I compare Deus Ex's to Blade Runner: The best Science-Fiction can offer.

And I compare Planescape: Torment's to the top 50 movies of all time combined: It is simply that much a masterpiece.

yeah me too.. you shouldn't take offence but really ... the story is so deep and fleshed out .. it's very well written. And the presentation is just awesome.

EDIT: I also disagree heavily with the post you just made above..

I liked the cutscenes and the storytelling.. etc.. actually everything you said was bad i thought was good.

I'm not really a fan of blade runner though. Thought it was pretty boring. (now that you mention it.. wasted potential.. since there is so much to develop and tell but the actual movie.. below average..when i saw it i was very dissapointed. Perhaps we just have very different tastes.)

Exacly.. and that is why he succeeded in making it so emotional !

Yeah to people who can interpret the meanings the story can feel deep & emotional.....especially Sunny's egg scenes as the egg yolks symbolised different characters..

While I don't necessarily agree that MGS4 had excessive use of cutscenes, or archaic story telling (what does that even mean?), I do agree that MGS4's story wasn't that great, and had some wasted potential.  But I think that most of my gripes about that comes from the fact that he wasn't really planning on working on the series for so long, and sort of had to tie up all the loose ends for the grand finale.

The story is deep???? Go play Planescape: Torment or Deus Ex, then come back and say that again.

See, my favorite genre is RPG and one of the first RPGs I played was FF8 - I loved it when I played it back then, thought it had a great story and characters. But then I started playing more and more RPGs... Fallout, Baldur's Gate, etc... In the end, when I replayed FF8, I thought it was just disappointing and realised that I was ignorant of high-quality RPGs when I first played FF8 - all that was left was nostalgia.

Does this case relate to yours? Did you play The Longest Journey, Deus Ex or Planescape Torment, which are claimed to have the best stories of alltime?
