Disaster Hits Europe

Monolith Soft's day of reckoning wreaking havoc on Wii this October.

UK, September 2, 2008 - Nintendo has revealed that its long-awaited collaboration with Monolith Soft, Disaster: Day of Crisis, is set to unleash the full force of Mother Nature's might in Europe on October 24.

First witnessed at 2006's Tokyo Games Show, Disaster: Day of Crisis has managed to keep a relatively low profile for a game featuring earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, floods and hurricanes. Playing as traumatised ex-marine Raymond Bryce, it's up to you to overcome terrorist group SURGE and numerous natural disasters in a bid to prevent all-out nuclear warfare.

Split over 23 single-player stages, Day of Crisis tasks you with exploring, shooting, driving, swimming and - God bless 'em - quick time events in order to rescue civilians in mild peril. Survival Points are awarded for each successful rescue which can be used to beef up Bryce's five critical skills, including Strength, Firearms and Mental - which apparently refers to his concentration skills rather than anything as staunchly anti-Nintendo as a Berserker mode.

Alongside those more traditional adventure elements, combat against the SURGE forces switches the game up to an on-rails shooter-style mode, promising more intense action as you use everything from handguns, automatics and shotguns to bring down your assailants. Battle Points earned in combat can be used to upgrade your arsenal throughout the game.

Finally, Nintendo is promising additional modes outside the main story including a shooting range, stamina campaigns and unlockables, ranging from weapons to costumes. Apparently there's also a 'Real Disaster Mode' that promises to be trickier than barbecuing in a tsunami.

We'll have more on Disaster: Day of Crisis as its European release on October 24 approaches.

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO

IGN confirmed sweet. That trailer, all 5 seconds of it from 2 yrs ago. WTF where is the coverage of this game.

Hope sparkit aint right, with so little coverage

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Nintendo takes the same route for this as they did for Metroid Prime 3. Nearly no promotion ...

Rescues will involve flapping the Wiimote and Nunchuk around, while combat will be played out in an ON RAILS FASHION as you blast and pummel your opponents.

Hmm. Seems weird for a game with such little press to come out so soon. Metroid Prime 3 didnt need much advertising, because people are familiar with the IP. This is new IP, it should be thrown in people's face a little more, like LBP is.

nintendo should've showed this game at E3 when everyone was pissed at them for not having any hardcore games, their new strategy of revealing games late could hurt sales, i mean whats left of 24th of October? 7 weeks?, it is good news though, i was waiting for this game for years.

Wii/Mario Kart Wii Code:2793-0686-5434

Its the complete lack of any information at all that worries me, especially as it is releasing so soon. There have been no hands-on previews that i can at least recall. Surely if this was indeed a brilliant game we would have heard something by now.
Don't get me wrong. I hope more than anything that this is just some trick by Nintendo to release an absolutely brilliant game just to prove to their audience that not displaying hardcore games in E3 did not mean they did not have any up their sleeves.
But after the delays, and all the lack of footage, i am becoming afraid that his game has just not lived up to its potential, and it is slowly going to get swept under the carpet.

My hype level is rising.

It would be nice if Nintendo decided to lie to us North Americans and there actually was one more game announcement coming for '08...

I'm really interested in this title now.

Why? Honestly, I have no idea, other than the fact that it is published by Nintendo.

A Nintendo published game has yet, for me, to be considered "not good". Sure some aren't top notch, but they're all good games.

On rails? That's not uber interesting though.
