You will always get an immediate sales spike which is followed by a return to more 'normal' sales for a product after a price cut. With how 'small' the PS3's price cut was, and that it is still a very expensive system, I expect that sales will not have improved that much a couple of weeks from now ...

You've said precisely same thing about PSP's price drop... Hmm, PSP still sells better...

Is it?

PSP sales for the week of April 29th (this is before the price drop):

130,82320,691,834

PSP sales for July 1st:

145,58322,018,924

PSP sales for June 24th:

135,02321,873,341

As you can see, since the price drop the sales boost ranges from 4% to 11%, a very small small increase for a nearly 1/6th price sales drop.  Hrmm, interesting.  Look at the PS3 now.  I'd say I'm being VERY generous giving them a 10% to 20% sales boost lifetime for a 1/6th price drop to $500.  I should probably re-adjust my estimate lower truthfully, but I'll stick with it.  I have faith that it will help some.

Well you are just going to be dead wrong. The PSP was a $200 system, while the PS3 was $600, so you're basically comparing apples and oranges. You can ramble however much you want about 1/6th drops. The fact is in the public's eye the PS3 dropping $100 is more meaningful than the PSP dropping $30. There was more of a widespread demand for a PS3 drop, and I gaurantee you a lot more people were holding out on buying PS3s waiting for a price drop than were doing that for the PSP; it's not even close in that regard. I'm not sure how much this price cut will help, I just know it'll be more than what you think.

But in the end, it only means that sales will not be effected that much. Even at 500$ it's still unaffordable. Droppiong the price a lone won't help. You need more. Commercial saying "New Low Price".

With the PSP's price drop it was still in a unaffordable range. Why buy a PSP at about 200 smackers when you can get a DS cheaper. same goes in this situation.

There is a 0% probability that sales will remain at this level for more than 1 week ...

I expect that the rate it is selling at 2 weeks from now will be its new level but (since I don't have a time machine) I can't tell you what that it ...

For the PS3 this shows a short term massive increase due to price drop, with a decent increase in ongoing sales.

The price drop was a good move, but I don't see it was enough to take away the limelight from the Wii.

It's amazing the Wii was ever at No. 1 as it's always sold out and these lists are updated every hour.

In amazon.co.uk the Wii has never left the No. 1 spot ever since it stopped being sold out.

"..just keep on trying 'till you run out of cake"

The price drop would be a lot more effective if a game like Folklore,Lair, Heavenly Sword would have released then.

But hey I am not complaining Sony is selling some units now and the gamers can save a 100$.

But one question why are their so many people buying it on Amazon.com?

Don't they have stores in their neighbourhoud to buy a PS3?

Why walk to a store if you can buy online?

 Are ya serious?

Why wait till the PS3 is at home when you can buy it in an hour in a store and play it on the same day :s.

0% is more like 25% chance sales will remain like this, but if it does then cool.

There are a few things which need to be brought up in order to make this meaningful ...

  1. What is a normal hourly/daily/weekly sales number for the PS3 on Amazon
  2. What is the quantity of Wii and XBox 360 systems sold on an hourly/daily/weekly basis
  3. How long will this sales spike last
  4. What will the sales be like after the initial spike
  5. Is the Blu-Ray remote being the #2 PS3 item a sign that people are buying this as a Blu-Ray player that also plays games

As much as a 1 week 25,000 to 50,000 sales increase in North America would be great for the PS3 it really needs a long term sales increase and it needs to start gaining ground on the Wii and XBox 360; if sales return to 'normal' next week or the week following that demonstrates something far different than if sales continue at this pace for the next 6 months.

One more - how has the announcement of the price cut impacted Wii and 360 sales? Most gamers know 1 price cut will be followed by 2 more. How many 360 buyers took their finger off the trigger in anticipation of a new cut? (Odds are the Wii wasn't affected one iota).
