You can "add the Wii to your wish list" or "Buy used" or "Notify a friend," but you can't buy new ones. It means that Amazon won't take preorders on Wiis because the product is too popular -- or, if you'd prefer, there aren't enough being manufactured to meet demand. If they took preorders, they could be clogged up for months in backorders.
Think of it this way. If a product sells well, great. If it sells out, even better; you can take some preorders and keep your inventory sold out for another week or two.
But what happens if you take preorders that keep you sold out for two months? Three? Six? At that point, taking preorders is a very bad idea. What happens if a guy learns it will take six months before he can get his item, and wants to back out? Do you return his money? If so, how do you deal with hundreds of people constantly buying an item, finding out how long it will take, then asking for a refund? That's incredibly messy, so retailers simply don't do it.
My Toys R Us took preorders for the Wii back in February. We had 200 people in queue about a week after we started taking them, and that was enough to keep us sold out for two months. We had to stop, because it gets really, really messy if you take someone's money and then say: "Thanks, we'll contact you in five months when your shipment arrives."
