Incandescence: I see now that in that sentence you equated "best" with "best-loved". The statement makes much more sense now; thank you for your clarification.

forevercloud3000: No. Popularity does not equate to best.

Unless you'd care to argue that every single Mario Kart is better than every single Final Fantasy, that is.

Regardless of what I personally think it is not up to me on what is better. Obviously people think Mario Kart 64 (the only one to pass FFVII) was simply that good of a game. Yet this one is debatable seeing as they are completly different genres. And Popularity does not make a game the best, but the best games are popular.

Mario Kart DS has smashed FFVII's numbers to paste.

Yes, ideally, it is you who says what is best. Going with a crowd mentality means giving up the responsibility of having your own opinions, which is something that absolutely has to be preserved.

No, the best games are not necessarily the most popular. To pretend that is to ignore sleeper hit underground games that were arguably the best of their respective generations: EarthBound and Steel Battalion, for instance, are both better than Final Fantasy VII, and neither of them sold even a tenth as much. Probably not a twentieth.

what i am trying to say is this

quality games are popular

but not all popular games are quality

like that....

there are plenty of other factors that weigh in on the matter, yes I know that. Yet you still cannot ignore a games supreme popularity over a franchise that is known around the world. The rules were no different for VI, VII, or VII yet VII is the one with the sales to show for it.

Yeah, but you're still wrong. Quality and popularity are only incidentally related, especially within the scope of a franchise like this. Sales =/= quality.

And no. I just listed two counterexamples (and very good ones) that disprove the point of quality games always being popular. Eternal Darkness is another. I guess I could keep going with this list, but I don't particularly want to.

You realize, though, that all the main series Pokemon games sold better than FFVII, right? Twice as well, bare minimum? And they're in the same genre, even.

FFVI is amazing. By far my favorite 2D FF. But FFVII is my favorite in the series. I mean, come on, go look how much that game costs now.

The cheapest on amazon.com used was $80.
New was anywhere from $190 to $850.

FFVII needs a remake or at least be put on PSN!

The pokemon's are quality games too, I will not take that from them. Shoot, I loves me some pokemon. Yet that still is within my stand point.
Quality games are popular...
FFVI
FFVII
Pokemon
Not all popular games are quality...
Ninja Gainden

Not all quality games are popular.

Steel Battalion
EarthBound
Terranigma
The Ogre Battle series
Eternal Darkness
Pretty much everything Atlus ever released
Treasure's entire library

These games disprove your hypothesis that quality translates into popularity.

I disliked virtually every game on your list so that does not bode well in you changing my opinion.

You're going to tell me you played Steel Battalion, EB, Terranigma, Person of Lordly Caliber, March of the Black Queen, Let Us Stand Together, Eternal Darkness, Sin and Punishment, Mischief Maker...

All of them. And didn't like any.

Really.

 Didn't SONY publish FFVII?

If they did, shouldn't that make it easier for them to make one of these happen?
