9 is a smart score to give

He can't give it a 10, because that would come across as cocky and people would then expect perfection.

He can't give it an 8, because while 8 is a good score, it's not a great score and he should be striving for greatness.

He can't give it 7 or lower, because that flat out doesn't look good

So he gives it a 9, because that shows he feels he made a great game, but isn't trying to hype it up too much and is being humble.

I really liked syndicate, that was a great Molyneux game.

This is just normal game hyping.  If he was a dick, he would have given it ten.

Populous, Syndicate, Theme Park, Magic Carpet, Dungeon Keeper...

Bullfrog was like the Bitmap Brothers, when you saw the logo you knew the quality was there.

If the game's creator himself is only rating it 9/10, then my hopes are not high. How could he possibly be satisfied with a development effort that he wouldn't have every confidence deserved a 10? How could ANY developer be satisfied with that?

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Everyone who thinks Molyneux was being egotistical should go back and re-read the context. The 9/10 remark was in reference to how much of his original vision he was able to get into the game... approximately 90%. The question was NOT how good the game was.
