My friend that is an otaku told me that death note was very good.I will soon start watching all sorts of animes to see by myself which ones are the best.

Ill have to say Death Note and Code Geass(both somewhat similar) are good animes, not great.
If you want to watch a great anime, try Legend Of the Galactic Heroes or Cowboy Bebop or maybe even Fullmetal Alchemist

Its really up to personal choices. There are great anime for everyone, whatever their taste. There are only a few which appeal to almost everyone(Honey and Clover comes to mind).

Death Note and Code Geass are definitely fantastic anime if you like the mental sparring that is a staple of both series.

Others I would recommend since you seem to be going for dubbed anime would be Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo (sp)
