Forums - Gaming - Do console gamers wat PC gaming to die?

@4lc0h0l

You will notice I mentioned only the campaign. I deliberately didn't mention multiplayer because it's obvious that that is what hotkeys are more useful for.

then you are failing on to points what is an rts without multiplayer and what is a hardcore game without multiplayer... and one more thing, more difficult doesnt mean its more hardcore, joystick are more difficult for aiming on fps but that doesnt mean its more hardcore than a mouse and a keyboard thats what you are not getting

well to make my point more valid see this video of starcraft at the 13:30 minute mark if you dont want to see it all and see how real rts games are played and when you can do that on consoles give me a call and i will eat my words http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0AX3vSHfI8&feature=related

If you play the old Unreal Tournament, or Counter Strike with a joystick(without a speed reduction), youll have your ass handed to you online. FPSes are made slower for consoles. Im not saying they arent good but the mouse, keyboard combination remains the best for FPSes currently. Of course, there are many genres where the tables are turned ,like simulations, sports, platformers. But FPS an RTS are not one of those.

I have always objected to the mantra that there are some games better on PC than on consoles (which unfortunately has even appeared in this thread). It's simply about what you're used to playing with.

If you've mostly played FPSs on the PC then you're bound to prefer that. I've played them mostly on consoles and I find a mouse and keyboard cumbersome and unintuitive. Which isn't much of a surprise since they're not designed for gaming.

I've actually played RTSs more on the PC than on consoles and I would still maintain that there isn't any difference playing them on a console. It's an illusion.

However, despite the fact that I think console gaming is superior, the existence of PC gaming doesn't affect me at all, so why should I want it to die?

There is a pretty massive speed difference in FPS/RTS when comparing mouse/kb to gamepads.  Take UT3 on PS3 for example.  Even though the game is already slowed down (speed of the characters) compared to the PC version, people who use mice have a distinct advantage over those with the console controller.  For example a person playing with a mouse can turn around with a flick of the mouse, while the person with a gamepad will take ages in comparison.  That isn't even taking into account the higher accuracy and speed of aiming.

Same with RTS's, even one designed for consoles can't compare to the speed that hotkeys and a mouse offer PC players.

On the other side of the coin, some games control better with a gamepad.  If I bought DMC4 on PC, I would want to play it with my DS3, and not my m/kb.

I do wish I had been able to get that game (I didn't bother because I was temporarily unable to get my PS3 online). I'd have been able to finally test this out and see how I fared against people using the mouse and keyboard. I would expect to be able to beat roughly the same proportion that I can normally beat.

The point you make about the mouse being more accurate is interesting because it raises the contradiction in the arguments made by PC fanboys, for instance the poster above who claims PS3/360 are "dumbed down". If it's easier to play with a mouse then surely playing with analogue sticks is more hardcore.

I will concede that in RTS games the use of hotkeys on PC is better. However, they are rarely needed to complete a campaign so it's not a major difference.

How is using the best control method less hardcore?  Many console games implement aim assist.  For example if you are just aiming forward, and someone runs across your crosshair, it will move slightly to follow them.  Not to mention they are often just slower to make using joysticks more feasible.  Is using an awful computer that only gets 10 fps on a game more hardcore because it is harder to play?

As for RTS's, you said the differences were an illusion.  Just because it is possible to complete the campaign with a controller doesn't mean it is even on par with a kb/mouse.

I don't want PC gaming to die. I want the elitist attitude we get from PC-only gamers to die.

Goes both ways, buddy, goes both ways.

I love playing games on my PC, and play games almost exclusively on it. Almost all my friends play games on the PC, and out of say, 20 of my friends, we all have PCs, and probably 15 of us play games occasionally to regularly. Out of the 20 of us, only 4 of us own a current gen console.

And then I get people on this site telling me "PC gaming is stupid, expensive, and needs to die."

Who's the elitist? I'm going to keep playing games on my PC because it's actually affordable, has awesome graphics, and in my opinion the best controls available.

That's hardly an elitist opinion...I don't see a good argument against it. There's good things about both platforms, but I don't go around saying console gaming needs to die, so you guys can go on with your elitist thread.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

That deserves a round of applause.

Seriously though...I think console gamers need to check themselves and see why perhaps some gamers might only prefer a PC, instead of turning into ravid fanboys.

There are a ton of valid reasons why one would only play PC games, just like someone might only want a Wii, 360 or PS3.

For myself, I own a Wii, but I hardly play it anymore other than Brawl a couple times a week. It's just too expensive, and that goes even more for 360 and PS3.

Almost everyone owns a computer...to pay a little more to make it a high-end machine is not hard at all...it's like $200 above what you'd pay for a decent regular computer. And games start cheap and get cheaper really fast. It doesn't makes sense NOT to play exclusively on the PC.

It's got the best graphics, you can do whatever you want on your PC...it's a PC after all...it's got the best controls, simply because even if you don't like using a mouse and keyboard, you can use a gamepad for almost any game.

No it's not always easy to set up your PC in your living room with your HDTV. It is possible though. But who cares! PC gaming is generally a single person experience, with plenty of online multiplayer to keep it social. If you prefer split-screen games on the couch, then play your consoles! That's what they're for. Don't act like every single platform has to cater to the same dumb audience.

Todays consoles wouldn't exist, if they wouldn't be PC gaming. Also hardware wouldn't make such a huge steps, if there wouldn't be PC gaming. Damn, am I being elitist now or just speaking the truth? :)

---True elitism part---
I don't (usually) play console games, because there isn't a single game that I would find fun. Most of games are just some dumbed down games of some genres/games. I like games that make you use your brain and I really haven't found any on consoles(I am not talking about games like Buzz! or puzzlequest...).

So all that combined in one sentence:
I see console games as games for mindless masses and therefore they do not interest me.
