Forums - Sony - We all know about the price cut and 80 GB. Now what about Europe?

Some guy in another forum I frequent pointed out quite rightly that the 80 GB box art contains french text:

See the "Édition Limitée" there?

This might indicate that this version will also be available in the European market. The question is, at what price?

EDIT - now that I think of it, it might be just because of Canada...

Currently, customers in USA can get a 60 GB PS3 with the Emotion Engine for 500 dollars, while European customers can get it without the Emotion Engine for 600 euros. As you probably know, that means 816 dollars, or a 316 dollars difference.

Yes, I know that part of that difference is taxes and higher distribution costs, but I also know that Sony is screwing European customers. Will this go on, or will they drop the European price too? Are they happy with sales in Europe?

you've already answerd to your question...selling 20K PS3 per week at 816$ is just like selling almost 30k consoles per week in the US...and i bet Sony would be quite happy if they could sell 30k consoles per week in the US in this time of the year.

So you think they're happy with European sales, even considering they're lower than the 360's?

maybe "happy" is too much of a big word, but actually PS3 sales are on par with x360's and given the huge difference in price and the lack of games (no one has bought a PS3 only for motorstorm or Resistance) i can assume that here in Europe Ps3 isn't doing that bad...at least isn't a disaster like in Japan or US.

Sony Europe has already said there will be an announcement at E3, which will be related to the SCEA announcement:

Now the question is... Will it be a price cut similar to what happened in America, or an introduction of the 80 GB model at a higher price than 600€? Could Sony be that stupid?

One of the reasons why European goods are more expensive is the higher tax rate and the very high £/$ or Euro/$ exchange rates. The £400 UK PS3 includes a whopping 17.5% tax. The price you see on the box is what you pay in the store. £60 of that is just tax (V.A.T). In the USA tax is added on at the checkout in stores and varies in each state. Where I used to live in Massachusetts a $600 PS3 would actually cost $630 at the checkout. New York city it would be $650. Some states like New Hampshire have no sales tax so it would still be $600. Sales tax is not added when you buy from websites based out of state.
Currently the exchange rates for the Pound and Euro are very high against the Dollar and near record highs due to economic reasons. I remember the exchange rate by $1.5 to the pound instead of $2 as it is now.
The UK's prices would still be higher but considering the tax differences and unusually high exchange rate helps explain the huge difference.

Edit. nothing.

Man, I thought it was only the UK that got screwed over on everything. Now it's the whole of Europe? This is madness...

I'd hate to be an American coming to England for a vacation (or even to live) as all of their money would only be half it's worth (as a lot of of things translate straight from dollars to pounds - so something that costs 8 dollar would cost 8 pounds).

But think of the luxourious life us Britains could live if we moved to America.

ok for the taxes...but the exachange rate should favour EU customers...600$ is about 440€...so i'd expect it to be 440€ + taxes...about 520€...not 600€.

Didn't Nintendo got sued before because of their unreasonable price fixing back in the days?!!!

Sony can't afford not to drop the prices in Europe or be faced with a lawsuit!

Just wait a few more months... It's reasonable to assume they will drop the price around Christmas period.

^^ yes Nintedo did get sued back in the days of the SNES for monopoly, but whats really funny is that instead of forceing them to pay a fine they had to give gamers who payed to much a coupon for a Nintendo game, so because they had a monopoly on games they where forced to sell more games.... only in america (whipes away tear)

announcment on Euro pricing will happen this thursday, so cut the whining.
