Forums - PC - My graphics card got fried so I'm getting a new PC or laptop

So I have a Dell XPS that is about 3 years old and while it was incredible 3 years ago (I would be runing two 1900x1200 resolutions, iTunes, Photoshop, Outlook, 3DMax, and whatever editor I happened to be working in and everything ran fine), it's just not that good today unfortunately.  I had planned to buy a computer in about a years time but today the graphics card finally gave out on me (while surfing this site actually...I blame ioi).

My warranty ran out 3 months ago so getting this thing fixed they said would cost me around $500 and for that kind of money I can get a decent PC or a for a little more I can get a decent laptop.

So all you people that love to tell me how great PC gaming is, I'm at your mercy: what should I get?

Keep these things in mind:

  • I do not want to spend more than $1000
  • I prefer laptops
  • I would like to be able to play most current games, though I don't really care about anything that is alreay on the 360 or anything uber like Crysis.  Mainly I would like to be able to play MMO's, Spore, and Starcraft II
  • I don't have the time to build my own PC
  • I will not get a mac

i don't know
i'm just posting this so it goes back to "hot topics" and hopefully u find an answer

Can't help you if you're not building your own PC...but if you prefer laptops your price is going to pretty much be $1000 at least for a decent gaming laptop.

What makes you think you don't have the time to build your own PC? I went with my friend to the TigerDirect store and helped him pick out everything he needed for a gaming PC...he ended up spending $950 for everything (he's one of those "buy it now!" guys, rather than searching for deals online), but we started shopping at 7 pm and we had him playing the Orange Box on completely maxed settings by 11:30 pm....

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

I would definitely recommend this ASUS model (G50V).

It's a bit on the pricey side though... But when you think about it, it would be good for about 5-6 years easily!

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

Watch my insane gameplay videos on my YouTube page!

Well, I guess the only way you can get a good gaming rig is to build your own desktop....But I think I've seen some semi-decent laptops for about $1K...try ASUS like SHMUP said....Maybe Alienware (dodges knives)..

Just buy a cheap old grapgics card for 20$ and wait another year as you originally intended... unless there are games you need to play... its not the rigth time for a new PC IMO... prices will go down fast... then again they always do...

I would suggest building a PC it will be cheaper especially if you shop around on www.newegg.com

PC Gamer

You should get a HP pavillon laptop. Hp is the top company with laptops and computers. Best time to buy one is on Black Friday. That's if you live in the u.s.

TO GOD BE THE GLORY

This doesn't fit your qualifications, but I'm still gonna throw it out there.
