Forums - Microsoft - XBox handheld...

Anyone hear the rumor that Microsoft is planning to make an XBox portable? If they do, what would it look like? The DS is the most popular to date, so let's see, how about 4 screens, 2 of them touch screens, the other 2 fold out to give a panorama view. It would be mini HD-DVD, to compete with the PSP, have a battery life of about 2 hours, just long enough to watch a movie. It would of course have 18 buttons, weigh about 5 pounds, so it could compete with the original XBox. It would also be a cellular telephone, so it could compete with the iPhone. It would access the internet, download large games in like 3 seconds, etc, etc. Really, Gates should leave the portable wars to Nintendo and Sony for now, then come in at the last minute and make a system that just blows the two of them away.

No! No! No! No! Nooooo!

Zune?

This rumor has been around for awhile. I wouldn't expect it for at least 2 years if it is true.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

a long time ago, the only game would be halo portable

It's never gonna happen. they will be putting games on the Zune though and possible the Zune phone(remember Microsoft owns Danger, the maker of the Sidekick), whenever that comes out.

if they were going to bring out a handheld they would have stopped rare developing games for the ds

they create fans.  if they make a bunch of handheld games, they would likely attract people to their handheld device before its even released rather than trying to build a base from nothing

I dont think MS wants to try and get into that market, but if it did... Well, I hope you have oven mits.

I own all three current consoles and a great gaming rig, now thats out of the way.

This space Reserved for the Nuggets of Wisdom dropped by Bladeforce:

"Why post something like this when all it will get is PS3 owners blinded to reality replying? BOTH THE PS3 AND BLUE-RAY WILL NOT LAST 3 YEARS! TECHNOLOGY CHANGED TOO FAST!"

"is it Wii FIt that has sold as many as PS3's sold? Thats a LOL Look at the total sales of software is it just me that sees Nintendo titles hitting 10m+ and you say they arent making a difference? Another LOL!"

"Hell, with all the negative hype Sony spin, people just aren't interested cost is too high and to get the true HD experience (1080p, 7.1 surround) you will need a $1000+ system. THAT IS GOING TO DO IT IN A RECESSION! PS4 will not happen"

This is Microsoft. They have rumors floating around like it's the last day of the Buy-2-Get-1-Free Rumor Sale. And many of them result in nothing more than vapor, just hype to get people excited and to pay less attention to whatever they're trying to compete with.

And hey, why not? If people are still willing to believe that MS is telling the truth every time a rumor "leaks" from MS about some product, they're going to keep milking that gullibility. It lets them "compete" without any need to produce an actual product, since they can count on their loyal followers not buying their would-be competitors' products in hopes of seeing an MS version come out. And hey, if they can net enough interest, maybe they'll actually make a half-hearted attempt to produce that item.

This is not new. Microsoft has done this over and over again. Windows 2000, Windows XP, DirectShow, the original XBOX, the Zune, Windows Vista, the XBOX 360, and countless other MS products were "leaked" as being in development significantly before their release to build hype. And the end product has never, ever, ever lived up to that hype. The XBOX handheld is vaporware, and shall remain vaporware until it's on store shelves. Do not play into Microsoft's hands and believe the hype.
