Just correcting, GTA was never a exclusive, but if sony or ms could hold it as a exclusive, then the winning logic would work.

Yes it was. Sony paid Rockstar to give them exclusive rights to the GTA series for four years on the PS2 so that Microsoft couldn't get their hands on it. Sony could only fight the inevitable for so long.

Well the ps2 is the best console EVER :)

Actually, the PS3 version is doing great. According to VGC, it's abot 350,000 unit sales below the X360 version, despite the X360 having more than twice the instal base.

So the PS2 isn't holding the PS3 back. The PS3 is holding the PS3 back. After all, why didn't the PS1 hold the PS2 back for anything? Consumers made the transition quickly, and effortlessly....Maybe it's because the PS3 is an inferior product to the X360/Wii comparison as opposed to the GC/XB comparison last gen, and users are having a harder time jumping onto a sinking ship?

Or.. wait.. it could be.. just might be.. and don't hold me to this.. the fact that USA is in huge economical problems worse than the crack in the 30s, and the ps3 is the most expencive console to ever having outsold consoles so much cheaper than it.

Pwnd.

The wii might be outselling it. But at Twice the price point, the ps3 is still outselling the xbox360.

the ps2 is actually a option for those wiiling to enjoy the games sony offers but don´t wanna pay the new gen prices. Even the $250 for a wii is high if compared with a $129 for a ps2. So probably the people buying ps2 are preocupied with price. they wouldn´t care to buy a nextgen console just yet. And the ps3 is pulling excellent numbers for it price. the x360 is the same price as wii and yet behind in sales. The ps3 expensive console already sold 1,5 mln units over x360 this year, so the x360 only reason for being ahead is the early launch. When the ps3 becames reasonably priced( $370 for the top SKu and $299 for the lowest) then the sales will skyrocket.

I'm not sure sales will ever skyrocket for the PS3.  For one thing, Sony has said that they won't, and really can't drop the price of the PS3 any more because they'll lose too much more money.  For another, price drops never create long-term effects.  Only short-term jumps in sales.  Sales spikes from price drops only last about a month or two, roughly the same as when console-exclusive killer apps are released.  Neither create long-term trends.

If the PS3 has only sold 1.5 million more units than the Xbox360 for this whole year so far, it's going to take another two years at least for it to catch up to the Xbox360--and only if the Xbox360 doesn't see sales spikes of it's own through upcoming price drops or killer app exclusives like Gears of War 2.  Sure, we can congratulate Sony on it's increased sales, but it's momentum doesn't seem to be enough to effectively topple or, in the near future, even strictly challenge the Xbox360.  After all, the X360 had a surge with the 20-gig Pro model's price drop, and will likely see another surge in September when the Arcade (and perhaps other models) drop further.  Microsoft is now making money with the Xbox360, so they're in a much safer place to drop prices than Sony is.

On top of which, the PS3 still has the smallest amount of 3rd party support and exclusive titles.  It could really turn around and be headed to completely own this generation, but we don't need a magic 8-Ball to see that in that case, "all signs point to no."  Too much damage was done to the PS3 early on, it's price is still the highest, it's killer apps have all failed to meet expectations (except for MGS4), and it's still losing exclusive titles.  If and when it does pass the Xbox360, it won't be by a very large margin.  Think more like the levels of the original Xbox and GameCube.  Currently, the PS3 is the GameCube.

I will agree, though, that for it's ridiculously high price, the PS3 is selling pretty well.  Far better than other lofty-priced machines of the past such as the Neo-Geo AES and the Panasonic 3DO.  It's still not selling well enough to be even remotely on it's way to conquering this generation.

When I say skyrocket, i mean compared with whats selling today, not in comparison with the wii, for example. ´The wii is winning this gen cause is too far ahead, even if it´s sales stagnate, and ps3 doubles, by the time ps3 reaches wii levels, this gen is finished and another has begun. But is my opinion taht the ps3 price is holding demand, specially from most of the ps2 owners. If you think that there are 120 mln ps2 owners, you guess that maybe some of them want too get the ps3, if only too continue to play the ps2 games while they wait for decent ps3 ones. But as the price is too high, they wait, or get another new gen console. As for the gc comparison, it sold only 30 mln units and a max of 6,3 mln units in it´s best year, whislt the ps3 will probably make to 12 mln this year. If it keeps that path in the next 2 years, it may end up with 80mln total, wich will put it in the top 5, among wii, ps2, ps1 and nes. Not bad, certainly not what they(sony) were expecting, but not a complete failure. As for the x360, the same logic of not perfect, but not bad works. In the nex gen they should work on the hw reliability and on IP games, so they have more exclusives than unreliable 3parties. Sony proved that this is not a good strategy, as they lost a lot of console sellers this gen. Matter of fact, if gtaiv was still a exclusive, this game alone migth have settled the 2nd place dispute, as it selled a total of 10 mln units.

The PS2 was the casual console last time, and it sold considerably well straight through to last year.  Very few of the casual fans and very few of the late adopters are going to jump to the PS3 so quickly, and since they were casuals and late adopters, it's also unlikely that they'll have any brand loyalty to Sony.  They may, as many have done, move on to the Xbox360 or Wii instead.  It was folly for Sony to ever believe that the PS3 would topple or even match the incredible sales of the PS2.

I think the numbers game is pretty funny lately since I just don't see either the PS3 or Xbox360 reaching 40 million units in total sales.  Not that 40 million is bad by any stretch of the imagination.  The PS3's sales are up a bit this year over last, no doubt in large part to Blu-Ray slaughtering HD-DVD.  But I doubt it will continue into next year.  As every generation shows, the longer the system is on the market, the gradually less it sells.  Next year is very likely to see all 5 currrent machines selling below their numbers for this year.  The fact that some actually sold better this year over last year is phenominal, but will likely not become the norm through 2009-2011.  Sales will start tapering off for all consoles most likely around January~March 2009.  I wouldn't be surprised if both the Xbox360 and PS3 spend 2009 selling at roughly the same level that the PS3 did in 2007, which was often around 80,000 - 120,000 per month.

If we go by annual averages, the PS3 (now) sells about 682,000 per month, the Xbox360 sells about 625,000 per month and the Wii averages about 1,400,000 per month.  From now (Sep08) to Dec09, that adds 35,464,000 to the PS3, 32,500,000 to the Xbox360, and 72,800,000 to the Wii for end-of-2012 totals being:

PS3:  50.5 million.
Xbox360:  52.9 million.
Wii:  103.8 million.

This would indicate an industry growth from about 170* million total sold consoles to about 207 million total consoles sold.  But who knows?  Blu-Ray demand and Wii appealling more to core gamers over 2009/2010 could skew the numbers even higher.  These are just average estimates.  Also, it falls in line with my belief that the PS3 may not actually overtake the Xbox360.  Again, they [Sony] have two major things against them in that struggle:  They can't afford any more price drops in the immediate future while MS can, and the Xbox360 still has more exclusive 3rd party support and games.  Keep in mind that I have some doubts that the PS3 or Xbox360 will actually reach those numbers because the "average number" model is based on the ridiculous idea that demand never drops straight through to 2012.  Demand will drop.  Demand always drops.  Demand sometimes goes up, but afterwards, it usually drops to below the levels prior to the demand spike.

Going by averages, the PS3 may reach something around 17 million this year.  If there truly is an Xbox360 price drop for all models next week--and no drops for the PS3 as Sony has said, their holiday season will likely not be as good as Microsoft's.  Though, I agree that if GTA4 had remained a PS3 exclusive, it could have done wonders for PS3 sales.

*Includes Dreamcast numbers, estimated at 10 million.  PS2: 120 million, Xbox: 24 million, GC: 21 million.

The ps2 is hurting the sales of the ps3, YES
The ps2 is helping SONY, YES

Screw the younger brother [ps3], your father needs help [SONY].

4 ≈ One

i agre with you in alnmost everything, except that the ps3 will not reach x360 levels(surpassing it) and that this year is it´s peak. I htink that because of the 2009 announced games and the better sku caming, 2009 will be the best selling year for ps3, then will start to drop. Also, you gatta remember that this gen may sale 3 years after the next gen, just like the ps2. Though is guess work thinking wich will do it. And don´t say wii, cause I think next nintendo will be way better than wii, with BC and wii remores, so it´s very likely to kill wii sales once it´s out.
