Forums - Sony - Sony Cuts PlayStation 3 Price by $100, Projects Sales to Double

Sales doubling? Give me a break. They lowered it to the price of the old 20GB... they will be lucky to see a 10% sales increase, 20% at the most. Jack Tretton needs to stop talking. He still owes me $24,000 when he claimed I couldn't find any PS3s on shelves.

Is Sony Drunk? I agree with the price cut but introducing a new $599 console is dumb. Its going to be the same situation with the 20 GB/60GB

Sales could double, since there's more than a price cut to be looked at. Fact of the matter is, there haven't been many games to justify a PS3 purchase regardless of price. Once the games start to come, the system will sell more. The fact that it's being paired up with a price cut is just gravy.

Now, there's no way in hell sales are going to double off of the price cut alone. That's asking too much of too little. But the fact of the matter is that this cut might push MS to cut sooner than they planned while a good Fall line-up wouldn't have done the same. People see this number and pay more attention to it, even if the initial cost of the console isn't the biggest reason behind its success (or lack there of, in the PS3's case)

You do not have the right to never be offended.

I don't think so, because the 60GB has everything in the console.  When someone was deciding between the 20GB and 60GB they were deciding between 3 times as much storage, wifi, card readers, and a glossy case.  That's worth about $100.  Motorstorm and 20GB is not worth $100.

I think people are used to the 60GB being $600 and now that it's $500 they will favor that version.

However, I still think they should be selling the 20GB at a cheaper price because gamers don't need wifi and card readers.  You can always upgrade the hard drive in the PS3, as well, unlike the Wii and 360.  They said the 20GB were selling only 20% of the time but a console sold is a console sold.

Anyway, those extra features are nice and it's now $100 cheaper.

Sony can say that sales have doubled without a problem; Christmas is coming up. Sales were already going to double. Three months from now, after more software has been released and we're approaching Christmas, they can say "See? Sales doubled!" and there's really no way to determine what caused what portions of the sales increase.

And we'll see an immediate increase, as well.

the 80 gig version is just silly. This is just a ploy that hopefully many people will be stupid and buy the 80 gig version instead of the 60 gig one. They are obviously losing a lot more money on the 60 gig one. The extra 20 gigs costs them what 10$?? Motorstorm doesn't really cost them anything except for the lost revenue if the person would have bought the game anyway.

As I understand it, the new 80Gb model, will be a new revision, that meens, with 0.65 CPU+GPU instead of the current 0.9. So it will use less power and generate less heat. Will properly also lose the PS1 and PS2 chips.. (And gain 20Gb of harddrive of course)

But Sony still have a lot of the old 60Gb PS3 standing arround, that they want to have sold, before the new 80Gb. So of course they will make the 60Gb look better that the new 80Gb. When they are sold out of the 60Gb, they will lower the price of the 80Gb.

Yep, and even if the 60GB is eventually phased out, right now it is the best deal and I would expect the 80GB to drop to $500 by the time the 60GB is gone.
