As I understand it, the new 80Gb model, will be a new revision, that meens, with 0.65 CPU+GPU instead of the current 0.9. So it will use less power and generate less heat. Will properly also lose the PS1 and PS2 chips.. (And gain 20Gb of harddrive of course)

But Sony still have a lot of the old 0.9 PS3 standing arround, that they want to have sold, before the new one. So of course they will make it look better that the new one. When they are sold out of the old one, they will lower the price of the new.

Yep, and even if the 60GB is eventually phased out, right now it is the best deal and I would expect the 80GB to drop to $500 by the time the 60GB is gone.
