Forums - Nintendo - IGN Helix review - 4.3

I don't know what the game is about, but I saw a thread about this game, so I thought I should post this

Helix Review

It'll only cost you $10 and your dignity.

August 28, 2008 - One of the most unfortunate "innovations" the Wii has inflicted upon the world is forcing people who just want to play a damn game to wave their arms all over the place like a bunch of jerks. Enter Helix, a downloadable WiiWare game that consists of nothing more than flailing around to the cheesiest techno this side of a Jock Jams CD. This is yet another offering that will only be enjoyed by the seven-year olds who don't know any better (and know no shame).

To play Helix, you hold two remotes and follow along with a robot, performing gestures in time with the music. Goofy robot man will do something (punch, arm circles, Saturday Night Fever point), and then you are supposed to mirror his movements a beat later. It's a little different than most rhythm games in that you are always trailing behind your avatar. As is to be expected, chaining moves together results in a higher score. Helix can provide a challenge on the hardest difficulty -- until you realize you can do pretty well by randomly swinging your arms around on your own.

I hope what I've just described sounds like hours of fun, because that's all the game has to offer. There is one mode. You unlock the 26 songs linearly, and that's it. No multiplayer, although the developers suggest you give one remote to a friend and try to play songs cooperatively. We gave it a shot, but found it to be nearly impossible.

Behind goofy robot man is a music visualizer every bit as amazing as the one that shipped with the 3DO. In 1993. That's appropriate, as the pedestrian beats spilling from your speakers sound like they're from the same period. Nothing here, either in-game or in menus, has any soul or personality.

Closing Comments
There isn't anything wrong with rhythm games that get you out of your seat. Dance Dance Revolution and Rock Band are two examples that are more fun to play moving around than sitting on a couch. But rather than approximate real activity, Helix incorporates the same shallow motion controls so many other Wii games use to embarrass the user. The blah visuals and generic techno don't make struggling through it any easier. At $10, this is way overpriced. If casual rhythm games are your thing, there are better ones on the Wii.

IGN Ratings for Helix (Wii)
Rating Description
out of 10 click here for ratings guide
4.5 Presentation
Only one game mode: play through 26 (bad) songs linearly. I know some doorways that have more personality.
4.0 Graphics
A dull, poorly motion-capped robot dances in front of the 3DO's music visualizer.
5.0 Sound
Super cheesy techno. But there are certainly people out there who like super cheesy techno.
4.0 Gameplay
Throw your hands in the air, and wave 'em like you just don't care (what people think of you).
4.0 Lasting Appeal
Once you've unlocked all 26 songs the show is over. There's no real multiplayer to speak of, and these songs won't have you coming back for more.
4.3
Poor
OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

"This is yet another offering that will only be enjoyed by the seven-year olds who don't know any better (and know no shame)."

This is as stupid as a reviewer can go. Judge and make jokes about the player that enjoy any game. Seriously, you don't liked, fine, but keep it to your minimal self.

You don't understand what they have to go through playing those shitty games sometimes.  They have to keep their humor or lose their sanity, as they are obligated to do a thorough review of the game.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Well, the game got the score it deserved it seems. Anyways this game wasn't even popular among Wii owners.

hm.. I thought this game looked interesting when I first saw a video of it...

The guy who wrote the IGN review was crazy. The game is super fun and a major value at $10.

Most people who played the game dont even like it? hmm. I would research that claim a little further:

Bottom line, this is definately one of the top 3 games currently available on Wii-Ware, hands down.

Read the whole thing, not what you want to read.

This will only take a moment of your time. *steals your watch*

Yeah, all I got from this review was that the reviewer has deep insecurity problems and the review probably should have been handed over to somebody more emotionally stable.

We got a joker here. Helix sucks, most people that play it stop after 20 minutes. Sure there are the one or two that dont hate it, obviously you are one of them.

Good first post, it could certainly go into the "top 10 worst ways to introduce yourself to a forum community, ever" thread.

I own all three current consoles and a great gaming rig, now thats out of the way.

"Why post something like this when all it will get is PS3 owners blinded to reality replying? BOTH THE PS3 AND BLUE-RAY WILL NOT LAST 3 YEARS! TECHNOLOGY CHANGED TOO FAST!"

"is it Wii FIt that has sold as many as PS3's sold? Thats a LOL Look at the total sales of software is it just me that sees Nintendo titles hitting 10m+ and you say they arent making a difference? Another LOL!"

"Hell, with all the negative hype Sony spin, people just aren't interested cost is too high and to get the true HD experience (1080p, 7.1 surround) you will need a $1000+ system. THAT IS GOING TO DO IT IN A RECESSION! PS4 will not happen"
