Sony's Choice: EyePet beat out Eight Days

It's harder to single out Nintendo for overlooking its "core audience" when you find out things like this. Speaking with GamesIndustry, Shuhei Yoshida, Sony's head of worldwide studios, revealed that the company chose to fund development of a desktop toy virtual pet – EyePet – over a promising core audience action title, Eight Days.

When asked about the affect that canceling London Studio projects The Getaway 3 and Eight Days had on other titles, Yoshida responded, "There are so many things that we want to do, more than we can do with the resources. So when London Studio was looking at the early work on EyePet and the prototype of Eight Days, they knew they couldn't do all of them." So ... EyePet it was.

Granted, we don't know with any certainty that Eight Days was going to be any good, but an original action IP on a still very core audience console would seem like something worth investing more time in over a ... virtual pet.

Yohshida also said regarding the London Studio that, "There are even more things they're working on at early concept stage." Tip for the staff there: If you don't want your big games canned, don't mention your "pet" projects to Shuhei the next time he pops in for a visit.

hahahahaahahhahahahaa....thats great.....i know the spin is going ot happen but come on...that is funny

hey boss check out this cool action title....oh that that is just my screen saver thing....no i don't think it would be hard to make a game out of it why?

This is because of this type of choice, that, next year, when PS3 will be at 300$, some casual will begin to buy it.

At the opposed, despite the good pricing of the arcade sku, the xobx360 has a lot of problem to compete with the Wii and you know why ??? Because the full xbox360 line-up is targeted over hardcore gamers ...

EDIT : be sure I dont care of this "nintendogs clone" game ...

Time to Work !

Hardcore suicide?

Again?

Prediction:
Disney will make KH3 with Nintendo.Yes,KH3 will be a Disney/Nintendo crossover.

With the difference that Sony will bring out Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2, Killzone 2 (wow lots of 2s) soon, Gran Turismo 5, God of War 3, Uncharted 2 later. While the most "core" games Nintendo has announced is Animal Crossing. Which is as casual and not core as it gets.

I am not sure if Sony will be successful by trying to recapture some of the casual audience but as long as I get a new Team Ico game, God of War3 and GT5 they can make all the virtual pets and party games they want.

There are already alot of core games coming to the system. And how much talk and hype was Eight Days getting anyway??? Suppose it sold less than 500K???

4 ≈ One

RIP Getaway 3.

If I remember right, everytime there was an article on Eight days, it was positive. Last I heard, was that Eight Days looked better than Killzone 2 and that the time of day and temperature of the game was dependant on where u live, if it rains irl, it rains in the game etc. I could've dreamt that so don't hold me to that (would look it up but I'm on my phone so...yea)

Hahaha I love it, Nintendo is truly destroying the industry and Sony is forced to abandon the hardcore.

@Kyros:

2 things to say.

1- Animal Crossing helps illustrate this generation's divide and just underscores how stupid the casual/hardcore terms are. Last generation nobody complained that AC was for casuals and core gamers loved it. Some would say "It's not my style of game" but several people don't like FPSs either and it would have been the same situation. Now it's just more evidence of "Nintendo abandoning the hardcore".

2- All those titles you mentioned? If we figure out the average amount of time between first hype and release i'd be shocked if it was under a year and a half. Killzone 2 was the most talked about title at E3 05. E3 08 has come and gone and we're still several months away from release. Do you honestly prefer waiting several years for a good game instead of Nintendo's announce when it's actually coming out strategy?

I'd be driven insane if Reggie had announced "Legend of Zelda: The Divine Blade" but told us no release date and it actually came out in late 2010. They learned their lesson after people went insane waiting for TP and don't want to keep hyping up titles that far into the future.

Go ahead and drool over concept art and screenshots for a game you won't play for another couple of years. I'd rather only see stuff when I know i'll actually play it soon.

Haha. I just came here for the whining and spinning. Kyros started out pretty good with libellule as close second.

Carry on, this has potential to become the most epic thread ever.
