Forums - Gaming - Ten Golden Rules of videogame piracy

I only steal from those who would try to steal from me. Every time I mod my PSP to play PS1 games, it is games I own already. I dont plan on rebuying a game I already own just to play on PSP. I buy all my other games though. I also play POKEMON on it because It is highway robbery that they make so many different versions that it is impossible to CATCH THEM ALL!

@ Kasz216: I apologize; I missed part of one of your previous posts. So, if you're talking about this:

"The truth therin is that this is a imperefct law created to help the status quo. When in reality what should happen is that people like the Krispy King should find a new way to get paid for their brilliance.

For example, by getting paid upfront before inventing the perfect rice krispy treat.

Or by packaging each free Rice Krispy treat full off adds for products that can't be duplicated eaisly like certain kinds of food, clothing and TVs.

Much like EA's exepirment with that new free Battlefield game."

While the ad idea would profit the developer, it would result in every game getting pumped full of ads, most of which would probably be non-contextual. (Imagine ads for Pepsi in Ratchet & Clank, or The Gap in Mario. Yeah, that's not a direction I'd like to see games take, thanks.)

And, getting paid upfront? Who would be willing to pay a developer upfront for a game that won't sell any copies because it's so much easier to pirate it?

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

I realize this discussion has developed pretty far already, but I'll throw in my two cents anyway. I think the fundamental problem that software piracy demonstrates is a breakdown of conventional laws of supply and demand. As we all know, price is determined when the two are at an equilibrium. However, in a world where information and intellectual works can be duplicated almost effortlessly, the supply is now practically infinite because it takes almost no effort (and therefore cost) to do so. The actual equilibrium, in this situation, is far lower than what the developers would like it to be. Of course, it's too late to take the public's ability to replicate information for themselves away from them (i.e. computers), and attempts to restrict copying by technical means fail every time without exception, as evidenced by the existence of cracks, patches and torrents for just about every conceivable piece of software.

The real questions we should asking ourselves are these: How much does a developer truly deserve for their work? Is the buying public qualified to make that judgment? Can developers profit in a world with completely unrestricted copying?

Need a reason to quit justifying your bad habits and just stop "stealing" software? How about: It could end the computer age. Yeah, watch and learn...

Oh and stop using stupid analogies about bakers, cars, paintings, whatever.

Don't use physical objects for a problem about digital entities and intellectual property...you can't explain digital piracy with physical objects.

Why not?  What makes digital different then Analog other then the fact that it's easier to copy.

The truth is.  While piracy is still wrong since that's the way people who make games make their living....

This isn't how people who make games should be making there living.

The only analogy that comes even remotely close is counterfeiting.  And "nonprofit counterfeiting" is a pretty damn good analogy, actually ... if only someone would use it.

I think the differnce between counterfitting and nonprofit counterfitting is that money are basically government documents.

Money isn't the only thing people counterfeit, you know.  Rolexes, designer clothes, etc. etc.  And the difference is "illegal" versus "illegal enterprise".

I cannot express my dissapointment for you twestrn. I can now say I would never want to meet or know you in real life.

If you think rule number 10 is true, go throw away your wallet, work a minimum wage job support a family and try and afford games. On top of that if you called me a cheep fucker to my face, I can tell you one thing.

You would start apologizing really fucking fast.

Get a life, get a grip, but most importantly get a fucking brain.

Such a pathetic post/thread and view of life. God damn.

I would not apologize, it's that simple.

As others have pointed out, what makes you so special you get things for free?  Do you think you're the only person that supports their family?

The way I see it, if you really think gaming is more important than your family, you have two options:

  1. Save your money like everyone else
  2. Get a different job

Let me also ask you this, you seem to think making money is important (and it is), so do you think people that work hard should have money taken away from them?  I hope not.

And you know what happens every time you pirate any game?  You are taking money away from peope that put blood, sweat, tears, and many *many* long nights in for that game.

So you make $28 an hour and work 80 hour weeks?  Whoopdeefuckingdo.  I work 80 hour weeks and do not get paid near what you do (and do not get paid overtime *or* by the hour).  Every time you decide to pirate a game you take even more money from me because you are in fact a cheap greedy fuck.  And again, no amount of internet intimidation would make me not say that to your face.

And you know what?  While I don't have three kids I do have a house, student loans, car loans, support my fiance, and even a wedding coming up in two weeks yet I still somehow manage to pay for my games.

it all makes so much sense.. lets see.. where to begin

(An example of Rule 10)

I still not sure about this theory.
But I am very sure that in my place, most of people who own 360and Wii, their games are hardly original copy.

So i think this can explain why Wii and 360 had a good hardware sells, but not the software.
