Now people won't need to buy Ps3s as Blu-Ray players?

Some pretty good spin there.

SSJ I hope to your right about sub $200 blu-ray for the holidays. I would snatch one up in a heartbeat. I wish blu-rays had ethernet as a standard so that profile versions wouldn't matter.

I would be surprised if there arent Blu-Ray players going for 150 bucks this holiday season, if not cheaper. Studios are getting pretty hot under the collar to get a new format that they can charge 25 bucks a disc for, getting pretty tired of the 9.99 DVD eating into their potential profits, wouldnt really even surprise me if they start subsidizing the production of the players. You already have...

Paramount I think it was offering people money for every DVD they upgrade to Blu-Ray with UPC verification.

I own all three current consoles and a great gaming rig, now thats out of the way.

This space Reserved for the Nuggets of Wisdom dropped by Bladeforce:

"Why post something like this when all it will get is PS3 owners blinded to reality replying? BOTH THE PS3 AND BLUE-RAY WILL NOT LAST 3 YEARS! TECHNOLOGY CHANGED TOO FAST!"

"is it Wii FIt that has sold as many as PS3's sold? Thats a LOL Look at the total sales of software is it just me that sees Nintendo titles hitting 10m+ and you say they arent making a difference? Another LOL!"

"Hell, with all the negative hype Sony spin, people just aren't interested cost is too high and to get the true HD experience (1080p, 7.1 surround) you will need a $1000+ system. THAT IS GOING TO DO IT IN A RECESSION! PS4 will not happen"

the PS3 is still the better deal but yet if people dont want to be able to play video games as well as Blu-ray movies it is cheaper for them to buy a stand alone player.

If I didn't already have a 360 and Wii, I would definitely go for a PS3 as a great gaming/Blu-ray combo.  But I really need a low-temp, low-power, quiet player that can replace my DVD player (I don't have enough space left for something the size and shape of a PS3).

The other issue for me is the power wasted using a PS3 as a movie player... standalone Blu-ray players probably use a lot less power for just watching movies.

So, even though the PS3 may be the ultimate "blu" machine, it's not necessarily the answer for everyone.

Have you seen the new models power consumption?

Yes.  Here's a link from 8/23/2008: http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/23/new-80gb-playstation-3-provides-minimal-power-savings-might-hav

According to the article, the new PS3 used >100 watts for playing games and a similar amount during movie playback.

Here is a link to a Panasonic Blu-ray player... 27 watts.

Huh... Blu-ray players are that cheap... that makes the disc adoption numbers even worse.

Still the studios will be doing everything they can to push Blu-ray so there is still some hope for it yet.

One thing to remember.

PS3 sold 15 million Blue Ray players.

Most stand alone players sold 50-100k at most...

economics of scale isn't the same...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Yeah, but i'm not talking per player.  I'm talking total Blu-ray discs sold vs how many DVD discs had been sold at this point in it's lifespan.

It isn't even remotely close.  The Blu-ray discs of Europe and the US combined is far behind the total number of DVDs sold in the US alone.

yeah there getting cheap in the uk to just look at play.com £179 for a samsung 1 maybe in a few months i will invest in 1

My "definitely will buy" pricepoint is $150.  I might be tempted at $199, depending on circumstances.

How low will they have to go before you decide to buy?
